I hope I'm not missing a thread on this but I'd like to replace my aging ADT system that the previous owner had installed with one that will connect via wifi and can be controlled by a phone app.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

From prior threads here, Simplisafe.com has some decent reviews. ADT has cell comms, and the ability to upgrade to a cell phone wi/fi controlled system as well. Might be cheaper to just upgrade without a whole new batch of sensors wires etc.

Find a local installer, not ADT, and see if they can swap out main box with what you want or start over with Simplisafe or similar.

Are door and Windows hard wired or wireless . New panel and existing wires. ADT tries to lock equipment down but can be changed.

I'm wanting to do it myself, I've got the skulls but just curious as to systems to use.  I'll look into simplesafe.  I've got an Adt wireless sensor that burns through batteries every 3 weeks.  Then the beeping starts at 2 am when it does and wakes me up randomly.

There are a number of DIY alarm forums, do a search. You can do a Honeywell Vista 20P or similar which would likely be close to what ADT put in originally. Systems like to Vista 20P are highly configurable with lots of options.

Zero affiliation with cold link, just used a company I remember looking at to give you some ideas;

https://www.alarmgrid.com/browse/home-security-systems

JMAC is another company that sells Honeywell.

Another, cold;

A couple hundred for a Honeywell box and a weekend would be cheaper. Its really not that hard  to wire them up. The programming can be a little shitty. However, your monitoring company can generally get you through a lot of the settings once you have it up and running. Depending on the sensors used by the ADT box, a Honeywell might just "drop-in".

Here is my thread when I did my own install. Been happy with it a year later.

I mentioned this in the post above installation thread, still applies;

The Honeywell systems are very solid, proven, expandable, and configurable. I recommend you check out some of the DIY alarm forums, there are a couple good forums that should come up with a search.

Options, maybe the 5870API (do a search for details), attaches to safe or ______________, tells you if it moves.

Maybe an envisalink board.

PM me if you're interested in a Vivint system.  I recently changed from ADT to Vivint and i love it.  I liked it so much I became a Vivint dealer.

I still haven't pulled the trigger on the asset sensors. Might have to revisit that idea soon.

I'm interested in replacing my aging system as well from ADT.  I've about had it with their BS and have been looking at Simplisafe.  There is another one I looked at too (but name is escaping me at the moment).

I figure the cost of the new system I would break even at the 1 year mark because of the lower monitoring fee.

Hey Bud..

I am not a dealer and have zero interest in telling anything but the truth...Buy a Honeywell Lynx Touch 5100 or higher off eBay with a Wifi module and GSM Communicator. You can then  start adding 5800 series components until your blue in the face. The system and components are rock solid and with the GSM communicator, no one will get in without the system calling out. I don't know much about the new guys on the block but I do know that Honeywell who bought Ademco has been doing this for a long time and know how to build this stuff. It's more important than you can imagine. I bought all my stuff off EBay and installed myself. I then hired Alarm-Grid to monitor it and got a bang up deal. Sterling at Alarm Grid is about the nicest guy you will ever meet and he know his stuff. I pay for GSM, Monitoring, Video, and Automation and it's all controlled through a app on my phone called Total Connect.. Works Perfect! Anyway, Hope that helps!

Alarm Net- The cell talks with honeywells main station network BEFORE the dental station is contacted. This allows homeywell to keep track of the Alarm Sigsnl and that keeps a careless central station employee from dropping or ignoring the signal.

GSM 4g Comunication- Protects you if lines are cut or Internet goes out--- THE ONLY WAY TO GO.

Rock Soild Sensors- I have glass breaks, Door and window, Shock, Fire, CO, and multiple X-ray and PIR motions--Never a false alarm and batts are monitored by the system. They last Yesrs, not months..

RF- Jam Detect..Tells you and Alarm Net if someone is trying to jam your communication

Smash Protection With APL- Sends a signal the second a contact or sensor goes off. If AlarmNet does not get a subsequent disarm signal they assume the system has been torn off the wall and disabled. Well, to bad bad guy..They alert the central monitoring station and dispatch.--Very Important for Wireless Systems!

Wireless (per memory), I recommended the Honeywell Vista above, I believe the Honeywell Lynx Touch is just a more techy wireless version.

All the Honeywell is good quality robust stuff.

Hi,

Sorry, yes, the wireless sensors are all 5800 series and seem to be bullet proof. I have them all over including uncontrolled temp areas and never a false alarm. I had the vista panel before the Lynx Touch and although a great panel, it's not as easy to program. Just make sure that anything you buy has smash and grab protection and that the monitoring you choose has the ability to monitor APL signals..

It sounds like something is wrong with your ADT sensors if you're going through batteries every few weeks.

I have ADT cell service with wireless sensors and Pulse.  I've changed a couple sensor batteries in 4 years.

Pulse isn't bad at all.  I've thought about getting a standalone camera system, but I have a couple cameras and light outlet controls for lamps, and I can arm/disarm my alarm via phone and see any sensor trips so I've stuck with it for now.

Yep, he's right.. You should not be going through batts like that. Also, really look into doing it yourself buddy.. You can save a ton of money with no contracts and the total connect app is the same app that ADT uses. I hope that helps and have fun. I know I did but I like this kind of stuff..

Yep I know is wrong.  I will Def be doing it myself.  I hate paying someone to do something I can do myself.
