This past December I took delivery of a new AMSEC BF6030. Low and behold, less than a year later I found myself needing more room.  As such, I called the place I bought the original from and worked a deal where they took the old one, and gave me the new one for a fair price.

Now that I've had the new one a few days, I have two issues:
1) the mechanical lock's dial is much harder to turn on the new unit.  AMSEC said give it a few weeks and see what happens.  Will it really loosen up?  It's not a wear item, so I can't believe it will get any better?
2) the door on the new safe has noticeable wiggle room, whereas I don't recall the old (smaller) safe having any.  I measured the play with the stem end of some digital calipers at two spots, and the door moves 0.092" (top left) and 0.11" (middle) when locked.  Is this excessive?  AMSEC says that it is OK/normal, but it sure doesn't strike me as "safe" especially when I just dropped some serious cash on this thing.

Thoughts?

Thanks

I wouldn't like that at all.  Send a message to TheSafeGuy on here as he works for AMSEC and see what he says.

Both problems are adjustment issues.  Call your dealer.  They should be able to rectify both in less than 30 minutes.

I have a BF 6636HD, there is no movement like that when the door is locked.  That's not acceptable, IMO.

Did they sell you a floor display model?

It was not a floor model; it came on a pallet and in a cardboard box.

How can the play be adjusted? The bolts cant be moved, and the distance between the bolts and fame is also fixed?

There should be a screw on the inside of the frame that sits between the extended bolt and frame.  If there is not one there, one can be installed.

Found the screw.  So I adjust it out which takes up the slop, but then all the load/contact is only on that one bolt?

That's correct.  Almost all safes have a similar type of adjustment, especially those with doors/bodies bent on a brake as opposed to formed from plate.

Thanks for your help.  I'm a bit let down by such sloppy tolerances on a cube with known dimensions, especially one that costs over 4 grand... But I guess that's the mechanical engineer in me.

Now to get the lock fixed!

Thanks again

I suspect if the dial is "tight" you are either dealing with an off center dial ring (should be able to tell by looking straight down from above to see if the dial is canted within the ring), or somebody threaded the driver on one revolution too tight.  Both of these issues will require removing the door panel and lock cover to correct.

All of these gun safes are mass produced with "bent" bodies.  You have to have enough slop so that any of the doors will fit into any of the bodies.  Every gun safe that I'm aware of has the same issue, although different manufacturers address it a bit differently.  On the flip side, had the safe been adjusted before you had the opportunity to discover the issue, you would have never even known as the door would have been snug.  Most people are surprised to know it's just an adjustment that makes the door snug as opposed to manufacturing methods with very low tolerances.

It isn't canted. I'll have it checked/fixed next week.  Thanks again!
