First thanks to TSG for the info in these threads - I stumbled on this after making my latest safe purchase and have much to ponder.
I am curious as to thoughts on multiple rods in a safe - overkill? I am thinking in terms of the new garage location for my safes, bitter cold temps - turn on the second one. Summer not so bad. I doubt I'll go broke with the low wattage of these, but would a little extra heat be out of order? Better to just get something like a camper refrig fan to circulate air? |

My safe lifes in an attached garage. Un heated, but temps get as low as 40 in the dead of winter. I have a humidity meter inside and outside the safe. winter air is very dry, so only a minimal difference in temps will keep your guns safe. Summer is where the air is wet and there aain, only a couple degrees will keep the moisture from condensing on your guns.
A golden rod or other heater just makes the air in the safe warmer than the outside air. It doesnt actually dry the air, just changes the dew point. Even in my 7248 Graffunder, one rod keeps everything about two-four degrees higher in the dead of winter. Unless you have a container that doesnt seal very well against air flow, or is much larger than mine, one heater will do the job. |
| I use one goldenrod in the bottom, but was finding that the temp in the top of the safe was the same as ambient temp outside the safe. So I added a 40W lightbulb to the top of the safe and the temp is now 2-4 degrees higher than external ambient temp. I also have two large rechargeable dehumidifier packs and the humidity in the safe stays around 55%, while external ambient humidity is in the 60s during the winter and in the 70s during spring and summer. |
