To all,

I am doing research for my father who wants to put up cameras around the outside of his home.  He is not very computer literate so I figured that a stand alone camera system with a DVR would suite his needs and be a lot easier for him to deal with instead of a PC based camera system.  I know his budget and I can run all the wires for him no problem.  What I am having a hard time figuring out is what brands are considered good brands and which ones to stay away from.  Usually my "google fu" is strong but trying to find real world reviews is like pulling teeth.  The two main brands that come up are "Lorex" and "Revo America". And a few others.  Can anyone give me any info on what brands are dependable?

Any help is appreciated at this point.  Thank you.

My recommendation would be to start with this thread: http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_6_46/343309_How_To___Security_camera_basics.html&page=1

Several pages, but worth reading imo.

This is a pretty good kit,  Lorex .  With couple free ports to add two more cameras if needed.  The Lorex cameras are rebranded Hikvision (mentioned in the link above) which have excellent reviews.

Quick details:
- HD 1080p cameras
- Good night vision out to a realistic 30-40ft in pitch black darkness
- PoE (Power over Ethernet)
- Can access live views from mobile devices
- 2TB HDD can record for 10+wks
