Hey Folks,

I've  been a lurker, and I'm making my first real post to seek guidance on a new safe. As for what I currently have, it's a Browning M28 safe, which I've outgrown. I've been doing a ton of research, and still haven't been able to narrow down the options. The safe is going to be in a garage, bolted to a concrete foundation, against a cinder block wall between a workbench and baker's rack. I live in a multi-level townhome in a gated community about a mile from the police station, and about three blocks from two fire stations (I'm between three hosiptals). Fire protection is something I'd like, but not my largest concern. I'm more concerned about the amount of steel, and the rigity of the locking mechanism and locks/bolts. We have an alarm (with sensors on the garage door), a dog that barks when there are even people walking outside on the sidewalk or ring the doorbell, and we are home pretty often. My budget is about $4500, and I'm just looking for opinions. I've read numerous threads here regarding this topic, but I feel that everyone's case is different, especially budget and location.

Here's what I've been looking at for the money. Superior safe Supreme S55, AMSEC BF series, Liberty Presidential (used), Sturdy Safe 4827-6 with stainless steel addition, Fort Knox Defender with deluxe package (extra steel), and a AMSEC RF series safe. As for size, I'm looking for something at least 70 inches tall, at least 42 inches wide (the max is 52 inches for the space) and depth isn't limited. I know there's a few specialists here, and without turning this into a peeing contest, I'd like to get some recommendations. I'll be honest and say that my current considerations are largely made because of what I've read here, between the Sturdy and the Amsecs, but these other options were brought up with local safe dealers, and seem like decent ones to consider. The Liberty would normally not be a consideration, mainly because of the internal hinges, but at the price I can potentially get it for, I'll consider it assuming it's not a huge problem with wear and tear. Thanks in advance for taking the time to assist me, it's a big chunk of money, but I wish I could put more in to move up to more TL15/30 rated safes, but the funds just arent there at the moment.

It sounds like you have already done your homework. My higher end 7 Gauge Liberty with internal hinges has served me well for lots and lots of years with no issues. At your budget, all of your potential choices you mention would work.

Funny you mentioned that, I got a call from a local Liberty dealer, and he said that there's a lightly used Liberty Presidential 50 coming up to market shortly. I think I'm going to look at it tomorrow. I just wanted to see how these safes stack up. This safe is only needed for the guns until my fiance and I get a new/bigger house. Once that's done, I'll probably just get something larger like a Graffunder or a Brown, and use whatever I get now for other stuff. Thanks for the reply!!

If you need that much room, another option, buy two Sturdys, get the extra reinforcement on the exposed sides and tops, and bolt them together side by side from the insides.  I have seen a few mention this idea, it would be lots of storage and even if you do not  bolt it down it would be almost impossible to move without some serious effort. Of course it would be subject to a brute force attack with an angle grinder, etc

You may also want to consider a TL-15 rated box for the higher end stuff and a cheaper RSC.

I like BGENE's suggestion on the two Sturdy's and one I wish I had planned for myself from the start. By buying them as a pair, you could also arrange the reinforcement plating so that you'd only need to do one side wall and top of each as well as the doors. You could also probably get away with a 36W which will be easier to move when the time comes.

If the delivered used Presidential  is a significantly better price than retail, that's certainly a good option as well.

Everyone's situation is different but it sounds like the odds of someone going after your gun safe with power tools (that aren't your own power tools that is) without someone noticing is low so realistically a well made RSC or B-rate level safe will likely keep most anyone who tries to get in out. Good luck with what ever you decide.

You guys are absolutely right, but that's the reason why I'm limited to that specific size and why I've already planned to get ANOTHER safe in the future. I think one of the benefits to having two safes is also to have them in seperate locations. I'd like to keep them in two different locations IN CASE someone that has the ability to open them, may only have time for one, hopefully not finding the second one and getting that one open too. Thanks for your comments folks, have a good weekend!

Hello bug_eyedmonster.  Have you considered a nice, USED TL rated safe?  You say your budget is around $4,500.   I would imagine you can find one in that price range. Im sure shipping would be salty if it was out of state, but surely you can find one local if you look hard enough.  Good luck.

You are absolutely right, but the only thing close to size I was looking for was the Liberty Presidential safe. I wish I could find something relatively close by, but it's just not happening at the moment. There was one in the east coast (Florida, I believe) but the frieght would have made it the savings null.
