Greetings all,
I was wondering what the ideal humidity level would be for a firearm storage room where I have a Stack-On cabinet (sold safe due to a long distance move) and was wondering if I need a de-humidifier. After 2 weeks of readings, the humidity low is 35% and the high is 48%. Temp low is 77, temp high is 86. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks HC |

No offense intended, but have you looked around here or done a search before asking? Same topic on the first page still. Your high reading of your humidity & the low of your temp sound real close to mine, never a problem with rust. Safe is a Liberty Lincoln, don't know much about Stack-On. |

Some have responded with the museum figures, 50% humidity and constant temp - but others will point out those figures are because of the wooden stocks and the humidity for modern rifles should be as low as you can go. <sigh> No good middle ground? I'd like to get as many practical opinions as possible. Based on the temp/humidity range I posted, I'd like to know if I'm okay or if need to buy a de-humidifier. I put a cap full of sugar in the area earlier today to see if it soaks any moisture. Thanks HC |

Keep them oiled, and get a golden rod if you're really worried. You wont' get rust unless you get condensation. That comes with temperature swings and humidity. Unless you're by the coast, you probably don't have much to worry about. Thanks hk47. I do keep them oiled, but the different climate has me paranoid over rust. I've got a Stack-On cabinet, not a safe - so will the golden rod really work? I used to have a great Liberty safe - but I sold it when we planned the move to Los Angeles. I do have box of desiccant in the cabinet, but that's it. Just trying to be careful. HC |

I keep the building with my safe at a constant 74-77 deg and the humidity around 30%-40% sometimes the humidity will get up to 50% if I let the dehumidifier fill to capacity without emptying. I never have any issues with keeping my building within these numbers although in the winter time it is usually kept in the 60 deg range and lower humidity. I live in Oklahoma so you really have to pay attention to these things.
If what you posted is pretty much your extreme spread I would think you would be safe especially if you kept a fan going in there to keep the air circulating |

Thanks HC With that tempature range anything at 50% or below is fine. I personally would add silica pack to it just to be safe but you are fine. |
