So the space shuttle that I was a door gunner on 13 missions for had ceramic tiles on it to keep the re-entry heat from destroying the craft.

Why not use ceramic tiles on the outside of the safe for fire protection?

Probably because one of those tiles cost's more than a 2-door Ft. Knox fire/water rated safe.

They already use them inside some safes.

Many quality safes have ceramic wool or something on the inside that protects the contents from fire.

If it wa on the outside, it would deflect heat from the steel.
