Here's a little questionnaire type thingy for those who have a safe already. This is so that people that are looking for safes have an idea of how happy people are with a particular brand. When I have time, I'll try to average the ratings based on manufacturer and model. Here's the template I'm thinking of using. I want to keep if fairly short, but still have enough information that it's helpful.

Manufacturer:

Model:

Pro's:

Con's:

Quality: 1-10 scale

Value: 1-10 (IE, compared to ALL other safe brands/models that you are familiar with, do you think you got the most out of your $$)

Would you buy the same safe again?

If not, why?

I'll start, since it's only fair.

Manufacturer: Champion Safe

Model: Trophy

Pro's: Decent fire rating, security features are great for price range, IMHO, one of the best safes for ~$1000.

Con's: Interior hinges. I didn't know how much I'd hate them until I had them. Thin steel, even on the door. Could use a 1/4" plate on the door at least. Also, interior rack is a little off. Some of the slots are too narrow for heavy barrels, or shotguns, yet others are just fine. I though they were all suppose to be the same size...maybe not?

Quality: 8

Value: 8

Would you buy the same safe again? On the same budget, yes. Otherwise, No.

If not, why? I paid $1397 for my safe total (including delivery and install and tax). I got a great deal, but I now wish I had saved up an extra 3-4 months and gone with an AMSEC BF line. I'm fine with what I have though.

Eta: 42 reads and no replies? Dang.

I've got a very low end cabinet...not even a safe, but I will join in:

Manufacturer: Stack - On

Model: 10-gun Compact Steel Security Cabinet

Pro's:
Compact, Lightweight, CHEAP

Con's:
CHEAP!!!!! Not very secure, no fire protection, small,

Quality: 1-10 scale:
2 (for what it is, it's not bad, but compared to other safes, it's bottom of the line)

Value: 1-10 (IE, compared to ALL other safe brands/models that you are familiar with, do you think you got the most out of your $$)
Considering I paid only $30 for it at a yard sale, still in the original box, 9.

Would you buy the same safe again?
If all I needed to do was secure stuff, then maybe.  But for protection purposes, HELL NO!!!!

If not, why?
This is a low end security cabinet, its not a safe by any means.
When I got it, I simply wanted to secure my guns to keep the kids away from the guns and put them out of sight.  Now I need a safe...fire protection, real security, real protection!!!

One problem you may have with this thread is that many folks don't want to list what they have. Good idea, but people who own gun safes don't like to give out info even when 'anonymous'. Just sayin'.

Scenario:

1. I post a lot of info in this forum about what my security measures are

2. I buy something in EE (even though I don't shop there other than price comparison) and someone now knows my name, and possibly address if I'm dumb enough to have it shipped to my house.

3. Seller in step 2 above runs a search on my threads and finds my threads in this forum. He learns what my security measures are.

4. Seller is Step 2 above is actually an intelligent thief (they do exist). He now has most of the info he needs for a job to include my name, my address, what I collect, and what my security measures are.

Yes, I am paranoid. But, paranoia is just an increased sense of awareness.

What is the deal with interior vs exterior hinges? I've heard that exterior hinges are preferable, but all the safes I've seen have interior hinges. What makes exterior hinges preferable?

You can open the door more than 90 degrees with exterior hinges.  I never knew how much I'd hate interior hinges, until I owned them.

+1

Paranoia is one of the best foundations on which to build security..

And it costs you nothing.
