HICAR is SOCOM looking at that and saying "alright, let's make this less retarded." For reference, gov't cost for the 6.8 load is around $2.40 per. M855A1 is $0.46, which is a tremendous difference in cost when looking at several hundred million cartridges being ordered. As it stands, HICAR does 2 things; achieves 20" barrel performance with sub-12" barrels, and replaces current spec M4 and derivatives with a more durable design using modern materials science. Replacing basic 4150 and C158 with armad and aermet, or equivalents. I can't in good conscience call "jack the pressure up even higher!" revolutionary, but it is a reasonable step forward considering the limitations of current small arms technology. Federal's peak cases will probably end up being even less expensive than brass once production gets spun up and the tech is adopted/licensed to other manufacturers. It also has the added benefit of reducing the use of a strategically important alloy. |

I still think that 5.56 lacks the BC to really be able to fully maximize what you can do with Peak case technology. And I don't think 77gr is going to be the answer. I think the ICAR 6mm ARC, if they adopted Peak-alloy (and they are testing non-brass cases), at HICAR pressures, would really give the best of both worlds. |
