| Well fellas, I shot it with my prototype. Can’t show any pictures yet, and there are some things I’m going to adjust with regard to hole size… but I was just scoring double taps at 100 yards free handing the gun with an OCL Hydrogen S, and the brass was kicking back at about 4:00 😊 |

I am testing my OEM plug tomorrow hopefully ... what size jet did you use? How was the gas ... for preference ... my YHM R2 was ejecting near 1:30 ... 2 on a good day ... |

Range report in for my SCAR jetted OEM gas plug! Using a 1.15mm jet. I AM SO HAPPY NOW…I am NOT getting gassed out from the Igman ammo (which is the hottest load and gassy ammo I have). No gassing out suppressed. That alone made this mod worth it. Ejection went from 1 o’clock to 3 o’clock, suppressed. I think I could go 1.2mm, maybe even 1.35mm. I got a 1.35mm that I will pop in next range session and test. I also tested this in unsuppressed setting (even though I will never fire it unsuppressed) and it worked as well and held the bolt open. That said, I think if I step up to 1.2mm or larger jet … it won’t lock open unsuppressed … which is fine by me. Ammo used today: Aguila 150gr, 168 FGMM and Igman 168 Surprisingly, FGMM remained at 1” group but ball ammo with Aguila improved under 2” with a 5-shot group, in my previous outing ... it was 2.5"ish ... FGMM would have been under 1” if I didn’t pull the upper right round. I love this platform, how consistent it is and how it handles heat. Now I love it even more because I’m not getting gassed out with a traditional flow can. SIG IF YOU ARE LISTENING…VENT THE PLUGS Accuracy shoots were only utilizing a bipod, no rest or rear bag. Optic used was a Sig MSR 2-12x44mm MRAD (really good glass for the money). Attached File Attached File Attached File |

I’m going to mess with the size of the expansion chamber and get it so we can get more out of the solid screw. The less venting we HAVE to do, the better :) but so far I’m stoked, it’s now a 308 that shoots like a 223. I’m glad you found a solution in the mean time! |

Do you know what the thread pitch is? Where did you get the 1.15mm jet? Any idea what the factory size ports are on the OEM plug? I may go down this road since the shop I used to manage would be able to do this for me. Although I do have a Sandman-X on the way. |

Yes—he started by drilling a 4mm hole, then tapped it with an M5 thread pitch, if I remember correctly. He did the 4mm first to create a shoulder, then tapped it from the front to fit the jet. We took measurements when I dropped the plug off nearly two months ago. From what I recall, the factory holes measured around 1.55mm to 1.6mm unsuppressed, and about 1.35mm suppressed. I bought the jet from Midwest Gunworks, but be aware—you’ll need a very long 4mm-wide flathead screwdriver to install it due to how deep the factory plug sits up front. I’d recommend getting one from Bennett or PMM instead; their versions use a 2.5mm Allen key. I believe Bennett offers jets as small as 1mm and below. That said, I’ll likely switch to the plug designed by @jbdDesigns in the end. His design will have much better gas control than modding the factory plug, and I think it'll be worth the upgrade. This whole idea came to me after I got my Spear and shot it suppressed for the first time. It made me realize SIG really should be venting the gas plug, like FN did with the SCAR. I’ll be ordering Bennett’s 5.56 MCX plugs soon and plan to start saving for the .308 version once it’s released. Also, my local gunsmith might be open to doing this kind of mod for others if there’s enough interest. One more thing—I have to give SIG credit: whatever steel spec and coatings they’re using on the barrel, extension, and bolt system are phenomenal. I’ve seen zero wear so far. Seriously—carbon wipes right off, the barrel handles heat and suppressor weight effortlessly, and swapping the barrel doesn’t shift my zero. Even taking the can on and off has had no noticeable impact on POI. This is hands-down my favorite .308 semi-auto platform to date. And I’ve owned FALs, SCARs, M14 EBRs, AR-10s, G3s—you name it. |

Yeah I think if I went to 1.35mm it would have ejected where you were .... 1.15mm gave me the option to have unsuppressed function and suppressed function ... in unsuppressed I was getting a 4:30 ejection everytime, it was so nice, suppressed was getting a 2:30-3 ... previously ... I was getting 3 o'clock ejection unsuppressed and was getting like a 1:30 sometimes even a 12:30 ejection suppressed with my R2 in OEM config. So venting is def doing its job and we both should get jobs as engineers at Sig :) ... |

OEM Gas Plug with 1.35mm Jet Report Unsuppressed= no longer locks back on last round in unsuppressed setting Suppressed= ejection functions just fine. More consistent ejection bang on 3 o’clock. Ejection pattern did not change much from 1.15mm to 1.35mm, but the ejection pattern is much tighter. You can see it even in the shell deflector the brass marks are hitting the same spot. Previously it was hitting more vertical up and down … and in original plug setup it hitting brass near the ejection port. Such a pleasure to shoot now as a lefty! I think I see Bennett’s idea of increasing gas volume with the plug because with the OEM plug, I think I can step up to 1.45mm and maybe even 1.5mm if I really want it to tame it down and get a 3:30-4 o’clock with my suppressor. Upon field stripping, I noticed that I am getting less fouling inside the trigger group and magazine with the 1.35mm vs the 1.15mm. This gun, without a doubt in OEM config is way way overgassed. I took accuracy report with Igman 168gr ammo. Wasn’t expecting much from this cheap stuff but my rifle is just a consistent shooter with all flavors. Again, I’ve never had a semi auto .308 gun that was this consistent. Attached File Attached File Attached File |

I have a question after watching the video I posted above. Does the NG762SPEAR-QD do the same thing for the SPEAR in 762 as the NG68SPEAR-QD does for the 6.8 rifle? I had one on order but they were taking too long getting them in so I ended up getting a HUXWRX. At his point do I want to spend another $1700 dollars on this dumpster fire? I'd also add that I bought a few of the multi-caliber OEM SIG magazines and like they mentioned, it's a night and day difference. I've had no failures with the OEM magazines. |
|
It’s not a dumpster fire … it’s just over gassed … do what I did or wait until Bennett has his gas plug. Sig does this to literally all their rifles. Over gassed the crap out of it. Even my tossing my Resonator R2 on my Spear tamed it down a lot but makes the overgassed situations that much more amplified. Now that I have a 1.35mm jet in my gas plug. It shoots like a slightly over gassed 5.56 … I freakin love this gun now that I’m vented … |

I'm not selling it or anything but you have to admit the whole things been a bit of a nightmare for SIG overall with this rifle. It was a legit question about the can though, I'm curious. I already have an OMEGA valve for my SPEAR LT. I plan to get one for my SPEAR when they come out. I really would like some feedback on the SIG NG can though, is it really as good as it is made out to be for these rifle? I'm kind of wondering if I want one to "complete" the package. |

The Sig NG can is legit and really cuts down on gas ... but it is $$$ so if you can afford it ... go for it ... I was close on getting that can but ultimately held off as I just can't imagine (myself), spending that kind of dough on a suppressor ... it is also heavy ... This whole gun is built around that can, including the gas settings (Sig still overgasses the guns though) ... I think some of the issues with this rifle is first and foremost the gassing is just to the stratosphere, that some, not all, have unrealistic expectations ... and they equate accuracy to dollars spent ... mine is a legit 1 MOA shooter all day with FGMM and has been throughout my ownership in fall, spring and summer months ... with it being a cosistent 2.5 MOA shooter with ball ... like all the time ... I can't ask for more ... I can tell you that none of my SCARs (17 or 20) was this consistent as my Spear. It is a set it and forget it type of gun for me ... and I love that ... My sample is the most consistent semi 308 (non-match built) shooter I have had thus far (previously I've owned LMT MWS, FAL, SCAR17, Tavor 7 and tested the MDR in its early days) ... |

My SIG 716i TREAD has noticeably less recoil than the SPEAR and is much easier to keep on target. Overall the TREAD feels way more solid also but I've not had any noticeable accuracy issues with the SPEAR either. I have no plans to sell it. Frankly, with all the people bitching and moaning about everything SIG right now, I'd take too much of a loss! Sigh. I think I'll be happier when I can tame the recoil a little bit more. Seriously I'm not unhappy with the SPEAR, and those OEM SPEAR magazines really helped. I've not had a single failure to feed since getting them. I'll probably end up getting the NG762SPEAR-QD at some point, after January. |

The NG just a rebranded SLX or they increase the decibel reduction on the NG line more than the SLX? |

That batch of SPEAR 6.8x51's that SIG released out into the civilian market a couple years ago "came" with them as part of the kit. the same as how the SURG and RSAR include a can. They now offer them in both 6.8 and 762 and it is my understanding they are tuned for the SPEAR's. |

This seems to have replaced the SLX line. NG Silencer selection Also, the RSAR did not include a can. It was just the pistol/SBR in a case with some other goodies but no can. The can issued for it is the SLH762-QDC but that was sold separately. ETA: The original release of the MCX Spear in 6.8 came with an SLX branded silencer, not the NG branded. This is making me think they simply rebranded the SLX to NG. SIG official release |

| Does SIG sell spare bolts for these? I'm debating getting a .308 Spear but I won't invest in a platform unless I can get some spare parts like a bolt head, firing pin, recoil springs, etc. I see they sell barrels and stuff but can't find any bolt heads on the website. |

Not yet. Looks like they're still focusing on production of rifles for the military contract. |
