How is the quality?  Are they worth the cash?  Is their something better out there?

Take my opinion with a grain of salt as I see several people are happy with theirs but I think the MFI handguards are cheap airsoft grade crap.

They are really thin, they flex easily in your hands and they look and feel like toy plastic compared to real Sig SAN handguards (just my own nit pickery).

Unfortunately due to Sig USA's decision to make their pistol / carbine action longer than the real SAN short systems (552/3) none of the real SAN parts will fit. You have more or less three options: use the original Sig USA handguards (that look like cut down 551A1 handguards), use one of the many Sig 556 pistol length rail systems or do like I did and find and buy a SAN endcap and a set of real Sig SAN 550 handguards and have them cut and drilled to fit the longer Sig USA action. DDLES used to offer this service but they no longer do. They still sell their version of the endcaps but their service is kind of spotty.

I'm actually on my SECOND set of SG550 handguards trying to fab a set. My first set was drunkenly cut by my friend's father who drilled the air holes crooked and left the handguards way too long to fit.

My first set broke after a couple of range trips. MFI replaced them for me, but the replacement set broke after a range trip or two as well so I gave up on them.

I now have a set of SIG 550 handguards that DDLES trimmed to length and drilled the vent holes in. It has held up for at least 2 years now and dozens of range trips with multiple shooters trying them. Not sure if they still offer the service though, and actual Swiss 550 handguards are hard to come by in the US.

It hit or miss, mine are fine and have been for years.
