I have a SIG 551-A1 Swiss that I would like to make into an SBR.  Normally I do all of my SBR work, but I have never messed with the SIG rifles and don't want to ruin an expensive rifle.  Does any know someone who does quality work I can send my rifle to for the SBR conversion.  Before anyone asks, I already have the approved Form 1.

Here is what I have....

This is what I want ...

Buy a 556 pistol and start swapping parts..

Probably your best least expensive option if you sell off the pistol lower with the rifle upper and a ar15 stock on it.

If you have the form 1, just send it to adco, cut back to 12.5, and have the port opened up to function with all ammo. Buy swiss hand guards and be done,

150 wish for gunsmithing 50 for handguards. No need to drop 1500 on a pistol, to spend 150 to swap barrels, and hope you not stuck with a bunch of extra parts

Except that he wants the shorter gas system and barrel than what the rifle can offer.

Yea I don't know if it can be modified to the shorter gas system and barrel from a rifle length.  Also don't think that sig sells a 551-a1 lower pistol.  So if I'm wrong you'll either end up with a two tone you'll have to get color matched if it bothers you or figure out what it takes to swap barrels.  I have a factory 556 sbr with a 551 lower and the two tone ain't that bad

If you swap out a pistol upper, the upper or lower will need to be refinished. Pistol uppers will be black and the 551A1 receiver is gray.

Refinishing the upper may cause issues with the rubber dust covers if it is a finish than needs to be heat cured. If you refinish the lower it is aluminum and that can be tricky depending on the finish used.

I like the ADCO idea and making it into a 551 Commando style 12.5"

Well he could also have the barrel and gas system swapped onto the 551A1 upper too. That may be more pain in the ass than just getting it refinished though.

I just picked up a 551-A1 myself.     I was thinking about SBRing mine to the Authentic 14.3 inch barrel length (actually 12.5 without flash hider)  which ADCO can do.   What you want to do is going to be expensive by the time you buy new handguards, have barrel work done and buy all new gas piston parts.

SIG offers the 551 SBR in your picture .. just have your dealer order one and sell your 551-A1 .. that would be the cheapest and easiest route.

He can't swap the uppers out... His post says he already has the form 1 back. So his serial number is already registered... He will just have to swap out the barrel assemblies.
