I have a 556 Classic that I really have not shot much.  I put a scope on it today and fired three diff types of Ammo: AE 55 gr, Hornady Steel match 75gr.,Black Hills 77gr.  my groups avg for the AE 55 gr was approx 11/2 inch and the other two avg 21/2"  all were 5 shot groups at 50yds.  do you guys find this aceptable for a 556? any pointers??
I know this is not a bench gun but my PSA M4 was around 1/2".

Practice with it and if your groups don't improve then there could be a problem with the rifle.  Most likely its just a practicing deficit.

Thats weird. The heavy bullets should have grouped better than the 55 gr. It has a 1/7 twist barrel. My 556 patrol shoots 1 1/2" groups at 100 yrds with 75gr blackhills

If you get 1.5" to 2.5" groups at 100 with the rifle you are doing good. It's not a tack driver but it will get the job done and keep running where other platforms will fail from fouling. I have a 556ER and  use 62gr. M855 and it shoots pretty well.

I will keep trying,  but shooting a better group with the 55gr didn't add up to me.

Were you benchresting the rifle for your initial site in, using a tripod, or shooting off of a bag? Did you try the 55gr. first when the barrel was cold and then use the heavier stuff? Also, each round has a different response on the rifle's recoil. In mine, the heavier stuff tends to cause the rifle to "jump" more when using my bipod which could have an affect on your grouping as well.

It was shooting off a tripod cradle type rest and sandbags.  I did shoot the 55gr first,  the barrel never got too hot to touch.

At one point I let it cool completely with the same results.  I should note that the groups were mostly vertical but the were not gradually going up or down?

I was holding it pretty tight I may have put to much pressure on the barrel?   but my 522 shot fine actually better then it's big brother.

I also have a 522 and it will make dime size groups at 50 with a 3-9x40.

Were you using a magnified optic? My 551A1 shoots groups about that size at 100 yards.

55X's made to be Minute Of Asshole - same as AK's, they are not competition guns.  As long as you are holding less than 4" - no worries.

I guess this is another way of saying it's a battle rifle and not a long range critter gitter!

Exactly. It's a non floating bbl with a bolt that looks quit similar to an AK. When I shot mine on a freshly painted steel plate at 200yds prone....and I could cover my 20 shot group with one of my hands (not spread). I was quite happy.

I haven't got to shoot it but the test target looks great and they were nice enough to ship it back with a new diopter sight.  It was a bad deal to have to return a rifle but the CS was top notch.

I shoot a lot and when I got my 556, its accuracy is just like yours. I gave it time thinking that I just needed to get used to the rifle. Accuracy didn't improve after I tried different loads and bullets (I handload). Finally called Sig and complained about the rifle's accuracy and they treated me like $hit. I told them that I work for a major sporting goods chain that sells a lot of Sig firearms, and will never recommend another Sig to a potential buyer if this is how they treat their customers. They called me back with a RA and I sent it back to Sig. A month passed by and I got the gun back with a new barrel on it. It will now shoot 1 1/2 MOA on the average.

In my case it sucked that the rifle shot bad but Sig made it right, it took eaxactly 4 weeks to get it back and two of those weeks were shipping.

I got about 1.7 MOA with 75 grain handloads.

75s and 80 grainers shoot MUCH better at 200 yards than at 100.

If you want better accuracy, move the target back to 200 yards instead of 100 yards.

Wow, that a significant improvement. The ones I've shot were in the 2 MOA range.
