Pardon my newbie ignorance, but is the P556 SWAT available for civilians?  If not, what makes the P556 SWAT LE only?  The quad rail would be much more preferable...

SWAT is a civvie friendly version, no problems.  That being said, as a SWAT owner, don't buy it.  Best cost is probably around 1750 to 1800 bucks (around what I paid) and you can do FAR better by buying the base model and modding it out.  I would try to find a base model for thirteen or fourteen hundred bucks, then put a heavy duty ACE folder on it, a Samson rail, and an ACE K Grip.  You will have a better running, better looking rifle... as much as I love my SIG SWAT, I'm completely retrofitting it now that I have more knowledge about the weapon.

If you decide to get a SWAT, do NOT get the forward grip w/light... it's a complete POS and they'll charge you an extra hundred bucks or more for it...

I just took at look at the Samson site...their rail looks great, but the price listed there was $309.  Hoping it can be acquired elsewhere for less.  I'll do a little searching.

One other (newbie) question...any thoughts on the Sig red dot sight.  I'm guessing I would be better off with spending the $$$ on higher quality sight.  Any suggestion that works particularly well for the P556?

Yeah, the Samson is expensive.... however if you can get a stock rifle for around 1300 or so, add that rail and an ACE folder and you're going to be within a hundred bucks of a SWAT model.  Yeah, it's still ballz expensive but you'll have a tighter piece of equipment for a comparable price.

And I don't have any first hand experience but the SIG dot sight looks like a Chinese POS.  I have an EOTech on mine that works very well...  but that being said I'm actually going back to irons, I'm probably going to put a set of Aurora sights on mine in the next month or so...  I'm putting on a short fixed sight and irons, going back to something a little more basic.

FWIW, GBAd is asking about the pistol here, right?  Not the rifle.

Sorry for delay...yes I was asking about the pistol.  Stupid new user error...should have posted in the Sig handgun area. I posted in the wrong forum. My apologies y'all.
