Hey everyone, new guy from Georgia with a question Ive applied for my FFL type 01 back around the middle of Jan. I have already got approved for the zoneing- this will be a actually store front not home based although I will be sharing the storefront with the owner of the building {problems?] My biggest concern is the storing of firearms and records what are they looking for in this regard? I will have a small gun safe for  the firearms but all I have for the records is a standard non locking file cabinet. I will be starting off very small and slowly growing from there. The main reason im doing this from a actually store front is I have family that own a lawn mower repair shop and offered me space there and the city said that was ok. Any tips or pitfalls to watch for exspecially the dreaded interview? Thanks for your help and I hope to get to know you all

I don't know where you've heard that the interview is dreadful, all the do is sit down and review regulations and recordkeeping with you. You are just a number, they've probably done hundreds of new FFL applicants just like you. They'll get a general idea of your business intentions and ask a few questions about it. That's it. They'll answer your questions too. It's not an interrogation.

There is NO REQUIREMENT FOR SAFE STORAGE OF FIREARMS - this is one of the biggest internet myths out there. They'd like to see it, but not required. As for your records, you must keep them at your licensed location. No problems with sharing a space as long as you have permission from the owner. They may ask for a letter from the property owner saying it's ok for you to sell guns from there. I'd go ahead and get one and have it ready.

Thanks for the reply I was fairly certain gun storage wasnt required as I could not find any ATF guidelines to follow - just another internet rumor I guess. As for the interview, a FFL in my area said they would come out nit pick my storage and drill me on the laws. In hindsight he probably isnt the best person to seek advice from in the future Guess he is sared of a little competion I will get something wrote up for the owners to sign but like I said there family [ my parents] so theres no problem on there end just concerned what the ATF may say about that.

Also, unless they have changed something, you can store inventory at another location other than the licensed premises. Might be an idea there for you if you have another storage device at another location. Your A & D book has to stay there though.

Yep, he is trying to scare you off from opening your own shop. ATF will not care if your parents own the building.

Thanks for the replys guys, guess I'm just a little nervous  about having my ducks in a row. Now if the ATF would hurry up I could stop stressing

Ive made a change at the last minute and decided to use a different name. So I will not have a DBA, tax Id, or business license at the interview as I want to make sure they will approve the change. I do have a letter from my local zoning department that I will be in compliance with all zoning regulations. Anybody know if this is going to cause a problem?

You can make changes to the application during the interview. That's one of the reasons they don an on-site visit before approving the application.

Thanks I figured they would but just wanted to check. I put my app in on Jan 16 and the check cleared on the 21st so hopefully I'll hear some in a couple weeks.
