Is there a way to build an AR and not register it? I’ve been thinking about this for a while, I know its legal to own it without going through an FFL but i cant figure out how. Its just personally I want at least one of my guns to be unregistered in the chance that something does happen to our rights or the ATF decides do what they did along the border and go door to door asking to see peoples weapons. I basically just don’t like the idea of everything being on a list. I’m aware I’m on tons of lists but id just like something you know.

thanks alot.

Buy a complete rifle, or just a lower if you can find one, from private seller.  Face to face, private sales of firearms are legal in VA, so look around and see if you snag one that way.  The majority of my gun purchases are private sales, but we have some great sources for buying/selling privately in TX so it's very easy.

The 4473 is not registration.  People trade and sell all the time so unless you live in a state with registration, there isnt a list of guns in your name

4473 forms are kept by the dealer.  BATF may inspect them for a specific purchaser or firearm, but they cannot make lists from
any not related to an investigation.

If a dealer ceases operations, they are to forward the 4473s to BATF for 'storage'.

They are not SUPPOSED to. I've heard stories of them scanning an entire dealer's 4473 inventory before.

(don't remember the names or places, but have heard it before)

OP - in Virginia there is no FFL required for face to face sales.  So, find another resident selling an AR, and buy it.  Done deal.

If you want a truly "sterile" rifle that's never been on anyone's books, then you'll need to get an 80% receiver, finish the machine work yourself, get a lower parts kit, assemble the lower, and buy the upper you want.

Live in a Free State?

In Texas you can make an AR and not even put ANY markings on it.

No BATF restrictions making a firearm for your own use (except MG).  No serial number is required, although it may take a little 'splaining'
to LE why you have a non-numbered firearm.

What?  Where's your source on that please?

Peruse the ATF web site. It has been this way since the dawn of time (literally).

It's perfectly legal for someone without a manufacturer's license to build a Title I firearm for personal use without marking the firearm with a s/n, manufacturer name, and location.
