I'm being offered a Steyr AUG M3 SA in trade for a rifle that I really don't care for. I'm a bit intrigued by the AUG, I'd rather have a Tavor.
What should I look for? I feel like the biggest pitfall is the magazine issue. If this trade would have happened a month-year ago (when the AUG mags were on sale, right?), it would have been a no-brainer. Now I'm worried about stuff like NATO stocks and charging handles. Enlighten me, please. For all I know, the guy is an active ARFCOMMER. Oh, can I suppress this thing? I've got a few cans that would work on it. I know that the gas regulator is adjustable, but would I have to alter it for suppressed use? |

Personally I like the AUG better than the TAVOR - as do a lot of people. Main advantage of a TAVOR is it can take AR mags. That advantage is more logistical than practical. AUG mags are in many ways a better design than AR mags, and aren't that expensive.
I would take the trade. |

The AUG mags are better than any of my AR mags. I don't see the mags as an issue.
I have held the Tavor and like it but the reports I have read from owners of both say that the AUG is more accurate and lighter. They are lighter but never shot a Tavor so I am not sure about the accuracy. No accuracy problems with my AUGs though. What are your concerns about the charging handle? Can't comment on the suppressor. |

I'm actually considering tradin my Tavor for an AUG A3.... I'm interested in this thread I'm actually in TX too. Maybe a 3 way trade if it all works out. Re: charging handle, I'm just not sure of the options, when I read about some of them that can act as a forward assist. |

Send me an email if you want to trade info on the guns. I'm in DFW. |

Re: mags
I always say "amateurs think tactics, professionals think logistics." But of course, I'm biased. Something about having done that for a long time. Who's got the best price on AUG mags right now? So far, I think that 44mag.com has, but where else can I check. Is a NATO stock worth it? Do that one or the AUG stock have last round bolt hold open? Bolt release, or do you have to run the charging handle? |
|
Standard stocks and NATO stocks all have last round hold open.
The A3 stock is the only gun with an external bolt release button. Otherwise you will have to run the charging handle. I would say that all new non-NATO stocks have an external bolt release button, but soon that won't be the case... |

Magpul's AUG mags are going to be out soon, you'll see one of two things happen with steyr AUG factory mags when that happens, prices drop and/or skyrocket. I'm calling it now that factory Austrian mags will skyrocket in price in the next year or two. And that's why you should be agile enough to jump on good deals as the occur. I bought a lot (LOTS) of AUG magazines from 44MAG when they were listed for 16.99 (30) and 19.99 (42). I'll probably buy some MAGPUL AUG magazines just to try and to experiment with, but I will continue to stalk good deals on Factory AUG magazines. I have 200 + AR magazines but no desire to have the NATO stock. |

It's on my 'someday' list, but the AUG mags are solid and still currently priced well. I'm assuming 'M3' = A3, or A3 M1? Either way, great rifle. A good friend has a Tavor w/Geiselle + various optics we've had on and off of it. We both prefer my AUG. I don't dislike the Tavor, it's just second place to the AUG for many that have shot and used both. |
