The A3 M1 optic housing is different from the Austrian SF scope housing. The Austrian version has rails in different places and the height is lower.
If there was a possibility of buying the SF specific optic housing, would you be interested? Yes or no poll responses would be great. |
Yes, I would buy one. The height thing is nice. But I'd just love it for being able to use scope covers.
Just to be clear, this would be without the actual scope itself? Just the housing? Anodized green? I know the Austrian used ones are green and the ones that Indonesian police use are black. But I'd love the factory green.. |

This is all just hypothetical right now.
If this happened I assume it would come as a complete unit with scope tube included. Maybe it would be cheaper without the tubes, but only two people have the tool to remove and tighten the screws, Pete and Steyr. Whether one or the other would want to mess with swapping optic tubes I don't know, but it could be a headache. |

Do you have any comparison images?
My initial reaction is: probably not, I like the current height. But if the new configuration had less ridiculous rail space bulking it up unnecessarily, and had rails in a location more suited to putting a RDS on and tilt-shooting without brass-in-the face (somehow), I'd take a look. |

For everyone's benefit, the below are some of my questions to Steyr Mannlicher and their response.
Q. Is the Austrian manufactured Steyr AUG SF optic housing of a lower height than the American manufactured Steyr AUG A3 M1? A. Yes, it is. The distance between the barrel axis and optic axis on the regular optic handle is 70mm. In the case of the SF it is 60mm since the Austrian Special Forces put an Aimpoint on top of the handle. Q. If it is of a lower height, will the Austrian AUG SF optic housing mate to, fit properly, and bolt onto the the American made AUG A3 M1? A. Yes, it would. Q. If the Austrian SF optic housing is able to attach to the American made A3 M1, can I get a part number for that optic housing so that Steyr USA could order those parts? A. In theory yes; however, since those lower SF handles have been made on special request of the Austrians, they will only be produced in the case of a large Army order again. If we just produce a few for the commercial market, the price would be way too high…. no way of telling when another big order for that type of handle will be received. |

Maleante, do you know how much lower the SF housing is? I would definately be interested since the M1 housing seems to put all of the reddots I have tried to mount annoyingly high. Also do you have any idea about how much weight it would add? The SF housing is 10mm lower than our M1 housing. It would put a red dot at a great height, the M1 is too high for my liking (even when using a small RMR). No idea on weight savings, probably not much though as it would just be the "arms" that are shortened. Quoted:

I could find some comparison images if you would like. I do like the current height as it is the same height as the A1 and A2 optic housings. That height works very well and is comfortable. What I do not like is the fact that adding a red dot sight atop the optic housing puts the red dot at an uncomfortable height (in my opinion). |

I emailed Steyr Mannlicher yesterday, received the reply last night.
Apparently we can get them, but we can't get them. Steyr stuff is already pricey, how high a price of "way too high" really is, I don't know. Maybe they just don't want to make them?!? I know that I would definitely pay a "way too high" price for an authentic SF scope, heck I already pay way too high prices for AUG stuff as is.
Unless anyone wants to email Steyr Arms in Alabama and see if we can get some of these SF scope housings, I don't see this going anywhere at the present time. If anything changes, I'll make a new thread. Thanks for playing. |

I ask Styer USA today they said they are trying to get some in! I know there's rumors Steyr has some stuff planned for the AUG this year, it would be nice if this were part of it. Thanks for letting them know you're interested in this. With Steyr every little bit counts. |

Would the AUG A3SF scope mount to a A3 (not M1)? I'd like to see more options for the original A3 that preserve the original AUG profile. A scope that would mount by replacing the top rail similar to the Talon scope mount. It will not work with the regular A3. For now Steyr's moved on from the A3 to the A3 M1. Maybe the A3 will come back one day, maybe not. Until then, I would not count on Steyr improving any A3 design. |

according to this thread, Steyr has (had?) A2 style housings for the M1... http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_6_43/419991__ARCHIVED_THREAD____Which_Scope_Option_For_The_New_Steyr_AUG_M1_SF_.html&page=1 ![]() |

It was supposed to come out after the initial M1 and then they decided against it. |

That's the A3 M1 housing - the higher of the two. |

hmm, what about the A1/A2? when i measure my A1 i get 2.6" which is right in the middle of those two you gave Quoted:
