I was wondering if anyone had any insight to these two rifles.

I'm leaning towards a 20" M1 with a 3x sight and a MRDS on the top rail, but am wondering if I'm limiting myself.

Here's my question, how is the eye relief on the 3x and 1.5x optic? What about in awkward positions such as shooting prone, supine, sideways, offhand ect.

I like the idea of having two optics because then I can just zero each accordingly but I'm wondering how the idea actually works in execution. I know the M1 is modular in that it has rails that you can replace the optic but if I'm gonna get a rail I'd much rather have the real estate the a3 has.

I just really like the classic look of the m1, can any of you Aug owners give any advice?

Get the M1 - chances are good that someone will come out with a longer rail for it.  Chances are nearly 0 that there will be an optic made for the A3.

For now get M1 3X and both rails to tide you over

I would say get the A3. If you like the classic look an integrated tube, grab the Manticore Talon Mount. That way you're not restricted to a fixed 1.5x or 3x scope, and you can get yourself a nice 1-4x or 1-6x variable scope. If you decide you want a rail, the M1 doesn't have anything with the length of the standard A3 rail, like you pointed out. At this point, there really isn't anything hte M1 does that the A3 can't, but the A3 certainly has advantages over the M1.

A3
Even on my old school A1, I have never understood the fixed 1.5 magnification.
I love the Swarovski glass but that power is pointless for me.
Principally I think a 5,56mm carbine should be adjustable 1 x 4 power, since not every situation is going to
to work with a given (fixed) magnification

Went to a carbine course for work and everyone who used a 1 x 4 power on their rifle, shot better/faster
consistently at 100 meters, than those who had fixed power optics or red dots.
And if the next stage was inside the 100 meters, they just rolled back the magnification....guys were
adjusting the magnification on the run (timed stages)
You can easily transition from a CQB type weapon to a DMR role

I currently run an Eotech 516 on my A3 and probably will be transitioning soon to a 1 x 4 just based on what I saw.

As far as 20 inch bbl versus 16 bbl ...go for 16. The principal idea of a bullpup is the overall size of the weapon without sacrificing or
compromising performance. A16 is is going to handle better in vehicles indoors etc....
It will have maybe 100fps loss of velocity. Accuracy is not so much related to barrel length....you can always buy another barrel and drop it in.
is 100fps going to be a deal breaker on performance...I'm inclined to say no, since I am not using FMJ like the military is stuck with..

Yet for most of us, M193 or M855 (or their clones) is all that we can afford to purchase in any sort of quantity.  The various "premium" rounds that are being billed as the next great thing in tactical land are still too expensive to keep on hand in any real numbers.

I agree... Good, quality defensive ammo is pricey....

I practice with 5,56mm or even Wolf....you don't need expensive ammo to run drills

The TAP ammo I keep on hand for my HD ammo ..
I just make sure the AUG had no issues with it by running a couple of 20 round boxes though first, before I rely on it in a
weapon....

Everyone has their reasons and then there's always the self-validation on supporting the one I got, because it's the best one, because I got it, making it the best one...

But accounting for all that, I rolled with the AUG A3M1 with integrated 3X scope, because the whole reason I wanted an AUG was because I always thought they were cool, in part due to the distinct aesthetics, which relied on the integrated scope design.  That said, it also works really really well.  As to BBL length, the 20" slightly undermines the exceptional shortness characteristics, while the 16" just looks too short and I don't like the way it looks.  So I went with 18".  Couldn't be happier, as it seems to be the best of both worlds for me.

If I "grow out" of the aesthetics focus on the M1, it's a simple matter to replace the optic with the rail option.  Or, I suspect more effective, I can just get a microdot to put on top of the 3X scope, or on the side.  And if I decide I want the shorter BBL, it's a 5 second procedure to swap out BBL's.

I'd get the M1.  I have an A3 setup with the Steyr A3 optic, and really love the gun, but it doesn't have that old school AUG look to it.

Like others have said, you can always go back to a rail with the M1, but you can't add a fixed optic to get that classic AUG look with the A3.

Sounds like reasonable decision making to me., you will be happy.
Get some quality trigger time and enjoy.....!!

Personally went with the M1 for the looks.  Understand the long rail is probably more useful, but just does not have the look.
