| Looking at getting a bullpup for my wife. It will be a range toy and a hd weapon. She shoots left handed and I have a lot of ar mags mainly pmags. So what should I be looking at? We both like the Aug but I understand it not to be lh friendly. Separate mags aren't that big of a deal but keeping mags I can run in all my carbines would be great. So what models should we look at? Fs2000? Thanks for any help |
| Call Pete (http://pjs-steyraug.com/) and ask him to spec out an AUG A3 with a NATO stock and left handed bolt. That would be my ideal suggestion. I'm not a fan of the Tavor (partly because I don't like IWI's policy on parts) and the FS2000 has almost no aftermarket support and you're limited on which mags will work in it. |
|
AUG with left hand bolt + AUG stock - call Pete from http://www.pjs-steyraug.com , or buy the A3 in RH, then pick up a left hand hybrid bolt from Ratworx or Steyr bolt from Pete. User swappable, but no NATO/AR mags.
Tavor in left hand, but probably harder to find, or buy in RH and then need to send to IMI to swap bolts. Thinking about it more (as in near full time shooting lefty, vs occasional support side), I might have to say the Tavor, as I believe the charging handle can be side-swapped. Not positive if the safety can swap sides or not, but you can get aftermarket full ambi safeties if desired. I don't have any urge for one shooting right handed, but were I going to shoot primarily lefty, I'd want the charging handle and safety on the right hand side of the firearm. FS2Ks seem to be on hold with respect to production..can probably still find one with some digging, though. |

Search around for a LH Tavor. Takes various STANAG mags plus a bolt hold open device that the Aug lacks. Spare parts market will catch up along with aftermarket support as time goes on. ETA: Copes posted a thread on the bullpupforum if you're interested still. |

All models of the AUG have manual bolt hold open AND bolt hold open on the last round of the magazine. Not sure why this keeps getting propagated, this isn't the first time and certainly won't be the last that someone gets it wrong. Unlike the Tavor, the AUG can manually lock the bolt open with the charging handle... can't do that on the Tavor. To lock the bolt back on the Tavor you need three hands. |

The three hands part is a overstatement as well it's easier then locking back the bolt on a AR I think. As to the AUG I think people make that mistake because they miss speak regarding the lack of a bolt release on the nato stock, besides that many are probably just plain misinformed considering bullpups of all varieties are rather rare in the wild in comparison to say aks or ars. |

For your situation it sounds like the Tavor is your best bet. I can shoot my RH Tavor weak sided and the brass doesn't hit my face either so you could still shoot it if you wanted to.
Of course you could get the Desert Tech MDR next year and not have any issues! |
|
According to what I have read, "next year" for an MDR is actually more like no earlier than the middle of next year. I personally would be too impatient to wait 18 months for an item that the general public hasn't had a chance to get their hands on and to report on. If anything goes wrong between then and now, the MDR could be delayed beyond the current estimate. I'd go with having a bird in the hand rather than two in the bush.
If the MDR does come to fruition and it is all that and a box of chocolates, you could likely sell the AUG or Tavor you get now and still get most of your money back then. I don't see either the Tavor or AUG taking a nose dive value-wise like the MSAR did. Just sayin'... |
| I'd recommend a LH Tavor which is a sweet shooting rifle. My RH Tavor takes more strength to charge than an AR-15 which surprised me. I could see some difficulty charging a Tavor for some users but with proper technique and practice this shouldn't be a deal breaker. As with any firearm it is best to handle and possibly shoot a firearm before buying. |

I love my FS2000, but it won't run pmags. If that's important to you, it's not going to work for you. Quoted:

The new M17 from K&M Arms hasn't been mentioned yet.
http://www.kmarms.com/ http://bullpupforum.com/index.php?topic=4719.0 It is supposed to be for sale in right hand only or left hand only, starting in April. It does take USGI mags, and from what others have said, has the best trigger of any bullpup out there. If I remember correctly, someone said it is a short crisp 3.5# trigger. Prototype gun, there already have been a few changes to it (for the better).
