I haven't seen anyone talking about this, so just wondering...
Have any of you guys done a pin and weld on your augs? |

Why would you do this?
"Ban state" compliance? Or cutting a barrel back? Either way, you will substantially kill the resale value of your AUG or barrel. There is an A1 on gunbroker that someone messed with, the barrel is profiled and cut, and they put a fake moderator on it. Looks like crap. Nobody is bidding more than 1,400 on it and the buy it now is 2,000. If the barrel was not screwed with, it would be a $2500 gun. |

I get your point about resale, but it seems that if you could bring it back to a 14.5, with the aug already being as compact as it is, this would make it even more wicked. Purely from a compactness standpoint I would think there would be more of this. |

The gasport on the 14" guns is elliptical if I recall correctly.
The gasport on your 16" barrel is different. Even if you made it legal by properly pinning or welding it, you might still have to deal with gasport issues irregardless of resale value. Why not wait a bit and see what Steyr offers the public. Steyr is already aware of what you want. It was brought up last year... |

Not "always" true about gas port needing to be opened: I have two E4's and three barrels, got bored one day and decided to have one of the barrels cut back to 13". Took it to my local smith (Iron Ridge Arms in CO is an 07/SOT) and had a Noveske Flaming Pig (had a couple extras laying around) blind pinned on. The total OAL of the barrel is 16 1/8", legal, and bad ass. I did nothing to the gas port and it runs 100% on both gas settings. The only time I need to switch to the H setting is when using crappy Wolf ammo. Maybe the reason I did not have to do anything to the gas port is because the Pig is really a one baffle suppressor (but classified by BATFE as just a flash hider) and does produce a little more back pressure. If that is the case then having the port drilled out one number larger then the stock 16" size would probably solve your reliability problems. The gasport diameter on the 20" barrel is the same as the 16" barrel. It's when you go below 16" that the gasport hole vastly differs as it is a 2.4mm ellipse. The gas ports on the MSAR's were different on 16" and 20" barrels. I had a 16" barrel cut down to just long enough to be good to go with a pinned Noveske pig brake and just loosing that inch or so needed the port to be just a bit bigger. I wish I could find a picture of that gun, it was a cool one. |
