Well, I decided to step into a gunshop that opened it's doors about a 1.5 years ago and almost lost it when I sighted 4 Steyr AUGs. 3 of them where the same model A1 with 20" barrels but different colors. Black, Green and Tan respectively. Two had the fixed 1.5 scope and one a flattop. The last was the model with the machine gun barrel.
The one that interested me had an issue. The receiver didn't fit snuggly to the stock. There was a noticeable 1/8 inch gap and no amount of attempting to force it in would work. What could cause this to occur?

So I'm assuming it still functions without issue?

Sorry to be pedantic, and my apologies in advance if I am mistaken, but it doesn't sound like these are A1s.  The A1 only had the fixed optic, it was the "Special Receiver" model which had a rail.  The A2 had a switchable setup with a standard fixed optic and an optional rail, which two could be interchanged by the user.  The USR had a 20" barrel with no flash hider and was otherwise largely an A2.  The A3 has no fixed optic option, only the rail.

What concerns me is that I saw the same gap when converting a USR via A3 parts kit - the stock needed minor relieving at the top lug to allow the USR/A2 receiver to seat fully and for the disassembly latch to close.  (Once that was done, the gap is gone though.)

So my advice is to carefully check the serial numbers on these rifles to make sure they're not parts guns and/or 922(r) violations...

No offense taken. Appreciate the lesson.
