Well, so far work in progress... This is a mock up. the butt pad was not attached permanently in the picture, neither is the front/rear sight and scope. I am waiting for 2" side rails to show up, and I am trying to decide if I should cut a rail on top of a receiver or attach one? I am leaning towards cutting one. I just need to order a dovetail cutter... The front can is fake, I use it to tension the barrel... The side slots/holes are not cut yet, I am trying to decide what pattern I like the best. By the way I was hoping to do a 300 black out conversion.. But I can't find anyone who sells 18" blackout barrels. What are your thoughts? |

300 blk is going to be a challenge because it is optimized for use in a sbr platform, most use pistol length gas systems the closest your going to get is a 16" with a carbine length gas system, which I believe would still require you to modify the gas system on the ar10. ( I don't have much experience on the M17s so feel free to correct me) and if you can you might have to mess around with the gas system to get the pressures you need.
Hope I was helpful |

Do M17s use std AR barrels? What is inside is a mid length gas 20" barrel with a unique barrel extension. If only I could find a mid length 18" blackout barrel I could make it work. The M17 barrel is a lot different than an AR15 barrel. The piston system is not on the same plane as the gas tube on an AR15, I checked it. Im also not sure that the M17 gas block would fit on an AR15 barrel due to barrel dia. If there is enough barrel dia. it would be easier to adapt the M17 gas system to a new AR15 barrel than it would be to adapt a DI barrel to the M17 barrel and bolt carrier. Conversion is not impossible of course given money, time and a lot of machine work but Im not sure of the value on this one. I would hoverver be impressed with anyone that could pull it off. |

Umm my hole idea is to take a 300 aac barrel with mid length gas system and install a piston that is on my M17 Im not doing any DI versions... It is a mid length piston set up, the barrel threads in to a proprietary barrel extension.. So all I have to do is take 300 barrel without extension and thread it on to the M17 extension, time it, head space it, and install the piston... Yes there is going to be some milling involved, but that is why I have a mill. |

This may suit your needs better, like I said before 300 Blk has gas pressure issues AFAIK the round just wont pressure a mid-length gas system at all. and the 7.62x40 is a similar concept but is only available in super sonic flavor. your other option would be to shorten the piston on your m17 Both are great ideas |

And BHW custom profiles barrels so they can probably ad your extension for you |
| get a 1 in 8 twist barrel blank. that will be easier to start with. From the looksof the system, it will not be difficult to modify the piston system to a carbine length system. I am looking at the same conversion, except I plan on doing my M17 as a SBR. I'll probably end up making a new piston rod, and that will let me use this one as a backup for my other M17. |

Rainier Arms makes the flash hider. The buttpad is Magpul CTR extended buttpad. I cut 3/8" from M17 rear buttpad area. Flled it with epoxy. Once that dried I drilled and tapped the screw holes for the butpad. However, I epoxied the stock and the screws in to the stock so it is not removable. (I just wanted some screws to be in there along with epoxy bond) Once it all dried, I sanded the rubber butpad and the stock to match. |

Nice work so far, Deussne! I hope the .300 AAC Blackout conversion works out for you. It would be very cool to have a .30 cal. compact, low recoil impulse carbine that will feed *reliably* from easy to get AR mags, PLUS the great versatility of bullet weight that the round offers (especially for us roll-your-own types). +1 for your efforts, and thanks for sharing your project with us. I'd love to see a barrel produced for the MSAR or Steyr AUG A3 some day..... |
