I found a Tan MSAR STG556 in my LGS for $1750. They also had 1 black and one OD, but the tan really grabs me. I have been hunting on GB, and have seen them as high as 2,500. I love the way it handles, and like the compactness of the package, but am a little uneasy about buying a gun from a bankrupt manufacturer. I think this is a semi-good deal on this rifle, but should I take the plunge? Or wait it out and see who picks up the AUG clone market next? thanks in advance!

Way overpriced, that should be about $1200 + the value of the mags, so say $1300. Look right here on the EE and on gunbroker, you can find one for a lot less. +1 I could never get used to the bull pup configuration. Just not natural. Same here, I had two MSAR STG-556s (not at the same time) and could never get used to the feel of having rounds eject so close to my face or feeling that bolt slam back. MSAR waffle mags were iffy (had a tendency to eject all the round out of the mag into the magwell if slammed too hard into the receiver). Overall I just was not convinced of its reliability and even though it had superb balance and great ergos, it was just not my cup of tee, I tried on two occasions to like them but could not. Not I would gladly take another shot at the bullpup scene if we could get our hands on a HK made L85, French Famas or Israeli Tavor. |
| Thanks for all the replies, looks like you all saved me some cash! I am located in Houston, and will flying myself and fiancee down to Brownsville tomorrow for an in-law gathering, but thanks for the invite! Maybe I'll take a harder look some of my other options before I plunk down for the MSAR. Though they feel soooo nice.. |

Not I would gladly take another shot at the bullpup scene if we could get our hands on a HK made L85, French Famas or Israeli Tavor. I don't think HK actually produced any from scratch, HK undertook a redesign of various aspects to remedy the design flaws and upgraded existing rifles accordingly. Apparently HK later used this experience to assist in designing the 416. The A1 does make a good target rifle (if you're into shooting precision with designs other than the AR), but they were fairly substandard in several respects. The A2 is rated as marginally more reliable than the other bullpup designs and the M16A2. They are not, in my opinion, a very ergonomic rifle, and the weight of one with accessories probably wouldn't appeal to the average shooter. I don't know a lot about the FAMAS, but was once told by a very experienced shooter that the F1 was fairly underwhelming. Opinions vary about them and they're not very well documented due to how few civilian versions were sold, even in France. FWIW: I believe the SA80 also beat them in reliability testing. I have seen a large number of them in France and they visually appear to be high-quality rifles. Wouldn't hesitate to purchase a civilian version if I still lived in America, even at the high prices they fetch. For me the AUG is the best combination of accuracy, ergonomics and reliability. All Austrian Steyr AUGs are excellent rifles (MSAR never offered their rifles here, so, no comparison from me). The Tavor may prove to be the best since it has the benefit of prior experience, whilst many other bullpup designs are more dated. |
