I have an STG-556 that when you pull the charging handle to the rear and tilt the handle upward to get the bolt to remain open, it will not remain in the open position. When you take your hand off the handle, it slams shut. It looks like the corner of the receiver is rounded and won't hold the bolt handle.
Is this normal? Does anyone else have this problem? Am I going to have to contact MSAR customer support AGAIN? |

Is there an empty magazine in it? If not, it's normal. You cannot lock the bolt back with the charging handle. Not sure why mine would be different, but I can "easily" lock the bolt back with the charging handle with or without a magazine (empty or not) inserted on both of my Gen4's. Would this be a difference in the generations? |

I believe he's talking about the "HK style" charging handle notch locking method that the MSAR ALMOST has.
Yes, I had this problem with one of my E4s, and I think it's a very common occurance. One of them, you pull the charging handle to the rear, then press it upward into the receiver "notch" and it would USUALLY stay. On the other one, it usually would NOT. I don't consider it a reliable way to lock the bolt to the rear. For an immediate action drill, I use my right hand across the top of the rail to hold the bolt into place while checking the chamber. (but I'm left handed so it works well) Is there a lot of wear on your plastic factory charging handle? Having a Raptor charging handle MAY help, but it may not. |

The charging handle should be able to lock the bolt back, mag or no mag, by pulling to the rear and locking the handle into the notch. However, if one regularly uses the "HK slap" to release the handle, I could see how that would put alot of wear on that area. |

Yes, I am referring to locking the bolt to the rear by pulling the charging handle to the rear and then tilting it toward the receiver. I have a brand new charging handle on it that I got from Ratworx, made by Manticore. I like this charging handle better than the factory charging handle. Much easier to grasp.
As far as pictures, I can take some and send them to someone who knows how to post them if they'd be willing to. Just send me a PM with an email address. |

So are you having an issue with the stock handle or the Raptor Charging Handle? If it is the Raptor, I can not only likely tell you what the issue is, but I can likely tell you the serial number of your gun within a small range. Sven |

I got your PM. I'll send you some pictures and the information you asked for as soon as I can get a friend with a camera to help me. |

Something you should check out. The charging handle regardless if it is stock or a Manticore Raptor will bend or rotate in "two" places. It will flip up not only at the hinge but the op-rod itself that the CH is attached to rotates. When you pull the CH all the way back, you can't just flip it up "just" at the hinge. If you do the bolt will "not" lock back as the angle of the CH is such that it will not rest "behind" the receiver shoulder. The hinge is almost like a "break away" feature. You have to rotate the op-rod up in it's entirity well past the receiver shoulder. Not sure I am explaining it correctly, MadDog

Not sure I am explaining it correctly, MadDog ![]() Best way to explain it is this: When rotating the handle to catch on the lug, make sure you are not pressing down, otherwise the "safety fold" feature of the charging handle shuttle will bend like a knee away from the receiver, reducing the contact between the charging handle and the receiver lug. When you rotate it inward to catch on the lug, make sure you are rotating up and inward. |

I would look at the charging handle for wear. If you do the HK slap to release the charging handle the receiver is going eat that plastic handle up. The good news is there is a pretty good replacement out ther. Which replacement are you referring to? You already have it. Originally I thought you were having problems with the factory handle. |

I went back and looked at it again. I now see why it was not locking to the rear. I never noticed that the charging handle was "double jointed." |
