I have a MSAR STG E4 in 7.62 x 39. Can I do barrel and bolt carrier/bolt changes to shoot .223 out of it? Can I use AR mags in it then? If the answers are 'yes', then where do I get the barrel and bolt carrier/ bolt from?

For the 7.62x39, IIRC, you'll need to swap the bolt and carrier as well as the barrel.  Once done, you're good to go.  As for where you can get them...it's a crap shoot unless Ratworx has stock they can sell.  Otherwise, keep your eyes on the EE and other for sale boards for when someone parts out an E4.

Thanks, I was hoping MSAR would sell them on their website, but their site is lacking any parts information.

That may be something coming down the road, but for now, the most reliable source is Ratworx.

Has anyone figured out exactly why the 5.45 has a different bolt carrier?  5.45 AR's work fine with standard AR parts save the bolt (obviously) so it's pretty confusing to me why they would change the recoil springs instead of change the gas system... just makes it harder for the end-user to change calibers cheaply.

From what I have been told by Ratworx and some that worked on the system, they tried altering/fiddling with the gas system on the 7.62x39 and 5.45, and ultimately it was necessary to alter the recoil springs to get it 'in the envelope'  Yes, an AR-15 can run on 5.45, but that doesn't mean that the original 5.56 AUG (including gas regulator size and recoil springs) was 'in the envelope' necessary to guarantee reliable function.

They could have just installed a 5.56 carrier, but then customers would bitch that the gun didn't run reliably...

I am not sure about the 5.45, but if you look at the gas regulator on a 7.62x39 gun it has three dots on it and the gas ports are different sizes.

I have a piston-op 5.45 and it runs fine using the same parts that LWRC used for the M6-A2.  I think it's just a failure of engineering.

Good people worked on the conversion and did what they had to do to get it to work. If someone else can do better knock yourself out.

Contact Ratworx and if they don't have the bolt and carrier than contact MSAR direct.  Barrels could be an issue, but you'll never for sure unless you call them up.

That is correct.  Please report back what they have to say about selling you a barrel.

then this really isn't a conversion, it's a stand alone gun. sad to say because i bought a e4 just for the 5.45 conversion that was dangled in front of us. sold it when house of card started to fall and saw that the conversions weren't going to happen.
to drop $1700 on a 5.45x39 rifle would be silly...at least for me. i bought a saiga and a piston 5.45 upper instead.
