| How can you tell which extractor you have? ie. the old one that's prone to issues, or the new, replacement one? |

More pictures (just not very good ones)

I must have a mutant STG556. The part that does the extracting looks like the old style. The part that holds the spring looks likes the new style, no o ring. The bc is ss, small indent in front of roller. The bolt appears to be chromed.
I broke down the bolt yeasterday and cleaned it. There was alot of brass shaving under the extracter. It has over 1500 rounds through it, 2/3 of it steel case Wolf or Silver Bear. Only two hiccups. One stuck case when it was new. Ripped the rim off the case. Full mag dumps and Wolf ammo will do that. The other problem was also ammo related. PMC bronze without powder in the case. The primer went off and the bullet was stuck in the throat of the chamber. So far I do not see any reason to change anything. |

With the extractor, is that somthing MSAR wants you to send the bold in to have it swapped? Or can I just order the part through them (or somwhere else?) and do it myself?
Mine, too looks like a middle generation from what's described: no indentation on the hook, but no O-ring groove, either. I know mine is a hard chromed bolt, too. I know mine was one of the few non-"special"STGs that followed the green Gabortsdengrabber (or whatever the heck it was) that came with the blacked out stainless carrier, stainless extractor and hard chromed bolt. Wondering if I should be that concerned with the extrator issue. Maybe Contemplating buying a spare or two for peace of mind. |

It would be a good idea to have two or three spares. I know that 1500 rounds is not a high round count. But it has given me a filling of confidence in my STG556. I understand the idea behind the hybrid. But I am not sure adding AR15 parts to the bolt is a good idea for anything other then casual use/range time. |

Guess we need to get an indepth photo thread of the different bolts. I didn't even know that MSAR had stainless steel carriers. Does anyone have a pic of the stainless steel carrier? The top back of the carrier has a small indent just in front of the roller. The ss bc are a bit heavier. |
