I finally got the chance to take out my new A3. It got a good cleaning and lube before I hit the range. After loading up a few rounds in one of the factor 30 round mags I pulled the charging handle, let it go, got all set, pulled the trigger and then . . . nothing. After pulling back the charging handle I found that there was no round in the chamber. I removed the mag, check to see that the rounds were in correctly, then gave it another go. This time it worked just fine. From then on I got this about 75% of the time I would seat a new mag. In checking it out it appears that he rounds are sitting too low for the bolt to pick them up. The magazine was inserted as far as I could and the mag release was full locked back down.
Is there something I'm missing here? Is there some sort of special trick? Was it a defective magazine that needs some material trimmed off of it? Thank you for your assistance. |

Couple of questions...
Assuming this is an aug a3 with the standard stock and not the nato stock? Is this happening wit all magazines or just the one? I hear that there weres some issues with some of the US made mags, although I never experienced any issues myself. If you have more than one mag, try the other ones. In short, sounds like a mag issue. Damien |

You probably have one of the bad mags that went out with some of the A3s. Since you only tested one mag, that is the likely source. Steyr will take them back no questions asked. The issue has since been resolved and was limited to a bad batch of mag springs. Unfortunately this bad batch is a batch that went out with some of the A3s... See if your other mag does it. The US mags Steyr will send you will not give you this issue.... |

If the mag has a little clear area behind the molded-in numbers it's a US mag. Those had some issues that Steyr USA is aware of. I think they were just molded a little thick in the feed lip area.
Steyr will swap those out for Austrian made mags, no problem. Never go anywhere with just one mag. 2 is 1, 1 is none. |

Quoted: There are not swapping them with Austrian mags. Not saying they didn't in your instance, but due to 922R concerns they certainly are not doing it now.If the mag has a little clear area behind the molded-in numbers it's a US mag. Never go anywhere with just one mag. 2 is 1, 1 is none. As I mentioned, there was a bad batch. I talked to Jack Riddle about this for about 20 minutes several months back. Its was an issue with a limited batch. Unfortunately that batch was the batch that was sent out with some of the A3s. The issue has been resolved, and Steyr will swap any affected mags out no questions asked.... |
