Is it possible to build a civilian version of this style AUG with the 24" (I recall) barrel and the bi-pod?

Either through MSAR or TPD, or pre ban?

Anyone making barrels in this length, I know SBR's are all the rage but I would pull the trigger on this first.

Yeah, I can agree with that. Back when I had a Steyr AUG (late 80's) I always dreamed of getting one of those barrels. But they were 50% of the cost of a new rifle back then.

I just bought an MSAR 556 with 20" barrel. I'm happy with that length in a bullpup. But I would like to buy a "shorty" barrel for special situations. And a longer barrel for designated marksman types of situations.

MSAR makes HBAR barrels. Dunno if or how you would put an original AUG bipod on it, but I'm sure somebody could.

I was just over in the MSAR section and read the post from Dave where he said the 24" barrels they made before didn't shoot as well as the 18.5" and 20" ones. OK, I can believe that. The benchrest people proved short barrels could be just as accurate (or more) than long ones. So the only advantage with the 24" barrel would be slightly higher velocity and blast moved further away from the shooter.

I would probably want to buy a short barrel first anyway. When MSAR gets out from under their backlog and starts having extra barrels available, I'll be ready to buy one. I _assumed_ that was going to be a 16" but then I saw references to a 14.5". I guess I wasn't around when this was discussed earlier. Can somebody clue me in? Are they NFA or do they have a permanently attached MD to make them 16"? That would seem to make sense and give you the shortest possible platform compared to a 16" barrel with more length added by the MD.

When can I buy one, are there pics, about how much will they cost, etc?

Thanks,

Gregg

but an MSAR or TPD is?  None of the current production American available AUGs are.  The LMG HBAR AUGs had a special open bolt trigger pack.  There are less than 15 in the entire country....
However, any of the Steyr AUGs, including the A3, will take a 24" HBAR barrel.   They will also take the open bolt trigger kit, assuming you can afford one, and are willing to jump through the ATF hoops.  Good luck finding one though....
ETA:  However, if you are hell bent, contact Pete Athens at PJs.  From him you can piece together almost everything you need to build a semi-auto clone including a separate A2 or A3 receiver.  He does not appear to have any of the 24" barrels instock though....

As a msar owner I would buy a 24" aug type LMG barrel assembly in a heartbeat.
One was just on gunbroker and I almost bought it.  I have only msar's  so
It would have been a thousand dollar gamble if I could have made it fit and function.
I would like to add that I am not after uber accuracy just would like to have a badass

Its my understanding that an AUG barrel will not fit in an MSAR and vice versa

There was a guy showing off a rail system with a aug barrel on his msar.
It is possible.

They are fun and look cool.  I think the bi-pod would be hard to replicate.
Do AUG barrels fit the msar?
I Bought this barrel back in 1999 for $650.
