before you get all up in arms, yes I did a search, found this, and it was no help at all since i am not interested in an E4. I like aug-style mags damnit I read the tacked FAQ and it says Gen 4's optics where made in the US....then where were the other generation's optics made on an otherwise US made gun? (honestly: I don't understand the other five distinctions listed in the sticky) So what's the scoop on Gen 3 vs Gen 4? |

They are essentially the same with a few distinctions. As you noted, both Gen 3 and Gen 4 are compatible with AUG mags without modification. They also have no forward assist like the Gen 1/2 models, which was apparently deemed unnecessary. The only real differences are the flash suppressor design and threading, the ejection port cover design, receiver lock design, and they use similar but different scopes. The knobs on the 4th-Gen US scope are bigger and easier to use than that of the foreign one, but other than that I can tell no differences.
Hope that helps. |

The main distinction is the receiver lock. The squared lock on the Gen4's will allow you to use an E4 or AUG stock.
The "generations", like the sticky says, are purely made up by the folks here to distinguish the rapid minor changes that came out of MSAR. It probably should be changed to something like, [original, intermediate and current.] The only really important change was from the rounded to the square receiver lock, and the introduction of the E4. If you aren't interested in ever swapping stocks out for something different, then it doesn't matter which "generation" you get. Just find a cheap one and be happy. |

We have made dozens of changes (some big, some small) to the rifle over the past several years. EVERY optic was produced in our factory, using a casting and our own machined parts, along with an imported from overseas optic tube, by a guy named Greg. We no longer produce the optic.
*edit to add that Greg is more or less a rock star in this area of the country! |
