Is there a semi automatic only version of the L85A2 rifle (The standard issue British service rifle)?  Just wondering, thanks in advance guys!

I know there are parts kits....but I don't think any one is tooled up to make them for commercial sale.

There are 3-6 in the U.S. that were imported by a company that was going to import them.  Last one that went for sale was something ridiculous like $90,000.

So for all practical purposes, no...

Prexis is supposed to be coming out with a parts kit with a receiver flat. On the website it is priced at $2900. I have heard rumors on Arfcom that maybe the guy making them is not completely trustworthy.  If the price was a lot lower I would get one.

What is a shame is that they make (made?) a version of the SA80/L85 that would be importable, the L98A1. The rifle has no gas system so is a "straight pull" rifle. Once in the US, I would bet a gas system could be added. Not going to happen though I bet.

They imported more than that, but not a lot more.

I bought one back in mid-late 80s NIB for the then MSRP of $5000, if you can believe that. Big money back then. They were made by British Aerospace and marked "SA80 Sporter", but were in the L85A1 configuration.  Mine came with a SUSAT at that price, but others the iron sight carry handle was a lesser cost option.  Guns were factory marked "Golden State Arms" as importer, though were in the end not actually imported by Golden State, but by another firm.

I sold it in the mid 90s for a nice profit, but regret it every day.  A2 parts are available all over ebay.uk and it would have been a nice project to upgrade it.  Lesson way learned.

$90,000 sounds very excess, but who knows? A friend who bought one at the same time sold his about 10 years ago for $20,000 and it was certainly not a super fast sale.

The A1 cadet rifle was manually operated, but was still built on the fully-automatic SA80 receiver.  It would be an MG by US standards.

The A2 I'm not as familiar with, but I'm sure it would have the same or similar problem.  The internal parts might be modified, but the fully-automatic capability of the receiver itself is likely still intact.
