for those of you who have an MSAR, how does it handle cheap steel and lacquer coated ammo?
Will wolf cycle dependably? Also, is there any reason not to keep my MSAR on gas setting 2 permanently? I know i'm asking basic questions, but thanks a lot for helping folks |

Well, I wish I could give you a def. answer.
When I first broke in my rifle I shot some 200 rounds brass cased on the 1st setting. It had a few failure to ejects/feeds. Then I shot some 200-300 rounds of wolf through it, and didn't have any problems after that. After that I cleaned and lubed the rifle. Next time I shot it was at a carbine match, I was shooting a mix of brown bear and brass cased rounds. I was having lots of problems, so I turned the setting up to two and didn't have any more problems after that. Later when I was re-zeroing my rifle at a gun range a few days ago, I had it on setting 1 and shooting brown bear - didn't have any problems. Maybe it could be it just needed to be broken in a little more, not sure. But if it does end up giving you any trouble, just flick the gas setting to #2. |

We (my wife and I) just got back from running our two E4's at the range. I hadn't even cleaned them from the last session with wolf where we ran both suppressed and unsuppressed so there were as dirty as you can get them. That said there were still no failures.
We have had these run 100% reliably with every bit of ammo we put through them (Wolf, Silver Bear, FIOCCHI, Privi, American Eagle, PMC, Blackhills, reloads etc.). I have kept them on setting 1 (although I switched to 2 and grenade/single shot just to see what it did). We have fired them both suppressed (Gemtech M496D's)and unsuppressed with zero issues. We just ran all of the MSAR mags through them again tonight and had no issues there either. We normally use PMAGS, SA80 Steel, or GI mags and I have had zero mag issues with all 80+ of our "non-MSAR" mags. The E4's are absolutely reliable, shoot quite well and are accurate too. Now if I could just learn to master the "full supination" of my 'forward hand firing grip' so I could control the 'massive recoil' the 5.56X45 dishes out. That way I could both 'stay on target' and take the next step toward being a "Magpul Tactical Master Ninja (MTMN)".
Sadly, being a bullpup, the MSAR E4 does not allow me to achieve highest level of 'Tactical Nirvana' because I cannot execute a snappy 'off hand acute angle corner clearing drill' with my non firing side. As we all know this is the most vital skill any person (or Ninja) can have in his or her arsenal. As executing it smartly will instantly turn the most battle hardened 'tango' in to a quivering mass of flesh as terror grips its very colon and causes fecal matter to shoot from (you get the point)! This is why no real 'professional militaries' use a bullpup as an issued weapon!
Thank goodness I can now get an ACR for a mere pittance! Heck they are available for just the cost of both our MSAR E4's + 1 set of LaRue mounted optics! That should allow me to do all of the 'tacticool' moves and look like a stone cold badass... |

My best friend (cop) and I ran two of my STG's (well broken-in) through a 2-day carbine class firing appx 1K rds each of Brown Bear 55gr. Gas setting was on "high" as per Dave's suggestion. My friend's STG (now his, I gave it to him after the class) ran 100% while mine made it to the very end of the last day before experiencing stuck casings (turned out later that the bolt sleeve had shed a prong, don't know if that had any bearing on the stuck casings).
As far as I'm concerned BB is GTG for practice ammo. Tomac |
