How good, how durable, how accurate is the handle optic that comes on the MSAR and looks like the original AUG optic? Does this optic come off with the handle?

Lots of threads on this optic in here.  In a nutshell, it's a solid optic, but it's based on 30 year old technology.  You'd be better served with a red dot of some kind mounded on a rail.  Yes the optic comes off with the entire "carry handle"  It's attached to the receiver with 3 bolts.

So when that optic / handle coles off- via the three screws, do I have a rail then that allows other optics to be mounted??

No. You have to purchase the optics rail separately.

We should get a "sticky" going on the optic.

I always wanted a REAL AUG back in the day... I love the look & the AUG Optic - so I am just getting the regular carry handle model...

That's what I did and it's the shnizzit. I also think it's a lot more aestetically pleasing than a short optics rail crammed with a front flip sight, rear flip sight and an aimpoint. Just my 2 cents.

This is waht I think also. Although there is something to be said for a rail with a quality red dot and an night vision device

Does the madness ever end???

The 1.5x optic on an AUG is dead sexy.  If someone made one that was a simple red dot, while keeping the same sleek lines, they'd sell a ton.

Very nice and clear glass. Easy adjustment. Holds zero very well.

How durable? Very durable. No batteries to die. No wires to fail. Tough aluminum housing and firmly secured with three bolts, which is an improvement over the original AUG design.

Considering you can pick up the stock 1.5x optic STGE4 right now for just $50.00 more than the railed version I 'd say you'd be smart going with the E4 optic. I'm a BIG fan of red dots and HWS sights with no eye relief and nice bright sight pictures, but it doesn't hurt to have an ultimate back up optic that doesn't depend on batteries or wires. You just never know what could happen in SHTF. Your optic could be damaged, EMP could take it out (not likely, but possible),...who knows? Keep BUS for certain, but at some point if your primary optic is now just a paper weight it would be nice to have a secondary optic to go to so you didn't have to keep using BUS.

i have been debating back and forth for a long time trying to decide which E4 to get. today i placed an order for a 16" tan E4 with the factory optic. i don't have a whole lot of money right now so i figured for $50 more i get a scope with the rifle. later on, i can buy the rail and an optic to go with it. oh, and i also bought 6 exta mags (for a total of 11) at $7.50 a piece from ratworx!

I just took the three screws out of the optic on my E4, how much pressure/whacking should it take to get the optic off the receiver?  I didnt wanna whack on it too much, cause well....its an optic.  From the looks of the setup I assume the optic slides toward the rear of the receiver to come off?  The manual didn't go into this proceedure.

Lifts straight up.  There's a recoil lug that keeps it from sliding.  You my have to rock it a bit to break it loose.  You won't hurt it.

I agree.  If we had a "Bullpup Optics" sticky, then it would be in there.

Come on Mods!  Really, why not

I saw a pic (on another board) that showed all the parts in the AUG receiver.  The optic is a tube that fits inside the housing.  It shouldn't be too difficult to develop some sort of red dot sight to replace it.

Might be a fun project to fiddle with.

Will the MSAR optic mount on a Steyr A3?

Nope.  The optic doesn't mount to picatinny rails and the bolt pattern is much different.

I think that's a very smart way to go right now. I didn't go that route when I bought my STG, but back then there was a $200 price difference.

yeah, i figured that it's a decent scope for ony $50 more. i'll see how it works out when it gets here! hopefully next week!

The only downside is if you decide to get the rail later, you'll have paid ~$180 to get where you are with just the rail.  On the flip side, you'll have the optic as a backup.
