yes there are a few parts kits out there, and no, it wouldn't be cheaper to build one from parts.

i would check out the

Aug A3 that sabre defence makes
STG 556s are good too
TPD AXR's are also very nice

all 3 of these choices are cheaper than an a1 or a2 aug

hmm not that i know of

some people don't like the slightly heavier trigger on  the aug type weapon
some people don't like bullpups
and some people dont like non dropfree mags

so really, if you dont mind those things, the aug and all of its clones mentioned above will be nothing short of awesome

From time to time you'll see various STG's or AUG's that are parted out. PJ Investments, Rat Worx, and individual private sellers do that from time-to-time.

Unfortunately, though the availability and expense of those individual parts would make an "AUG Build" very time consuming and would most likely cost you very close to what you would pay for an entire STG rifle.

Right now the most cost affordable bullpup of the STG/AXR/AUG is the STG.

Your best bet would be to seek a sale either here through the equipment exchange by either finding a "Wanted to Sell" WTS or placing your own "Wanted To Buy" WTB request for an STG 556.

The most affordable is the STG 556 with the top optic 9" rail. That is the standard STG and it comes with simply the rifle, the top optic rail and a cardboard box.  Over at Gunbroker.com you can find STG-556 rifles selling for between $1,600 to $1,700.  If you get into an auction with no reserve you might be able to find one for less. We have had members here obtain STG 556 rifles for as littles as $1.500 mostly through private parties.

The only negative to some is the STG-556 rifles do NOT accept AR15 magazines.  The soon to be released STG-556E4 variant WILL accept magazines, but it will be priced much higher for awhile than the standard STG-556.

The other two rifles the AXR and the AUG A3 along with older AUG A1's, A2's, and USR rifles are all above the $2K mark.

Keep looking and perhaps if the panic buying slows down you might be able to get a real steal.  It was not unheard of before the election for folks to get an STG-556 for slightly less than $1,500, but unfortunately we have not seen those kinds of prices in over half a year now.

+1

It's not that its any hevier than other triggers out there... it's more the horribly creepy+long pull before the break.

The BEST AUG triggers pretty much suck compared to the WORST AR units.  Most bullpups are this way due to the long trigger bars and connectors required to put the action so far back in the butt of the gun.  I do however like the pull on the STG better than the PS90 and FN 2000 I've tried.

That said, they do "break in" a bit... you get used to it over time... and there are so many other great qualities to the AUG (or AUG style) platform, that most choose to live with it.

what are some of the great qualiities

compactness
high quality (all 3 of the main makers)
quick change barrels
ergonomics (balance and feel are great, as with weight distribution)
easy disassembly and maintenance
and of course, cool factor

-It's as short as a 10.5" barrel AR-15.
-Recoil is much more manageable.
-Can swap the ejection left with just a quick bolt swap.
-It's CONSIDERABLY cleaner than an AR-15.  After 200 shots there was nearly nothing on any part of my gun except the barrel and a little bit on the pistons.
-It's way funner to shoot than an AR-15 (opinion)
-The balance is toward the rear so it's way easer to shoulder the rifle properly and keep it there.
-It looks really cool (opinion)
-Quick swap barrel

Cleanliness (piston vs. gas)
Reliability (piston vs. gas)
Ease of diassembaly/reassembaly (Speaking for the AUG in particular)

Oh, and don't forget:  It's looks freakin' cool!

Sorry... none of these are in any way original and have been stated by others above.  But you asked so I answered (before reading the end of the thread )

The key positive to the bullpup has always been and will always be that it is the only way to get a short overall length rifle without losing barrel length.  That provides you with a short length rifle that still has a barrel long enough to provide proper fragmentation of the .223 or 5.56mm round at intermediate distances as well as short distances. The same can not be said for standard configuration rifles with 10.5" barrels that are equal in length to a bullpup.

The added bonus to us civilians and law enforcement as well who have to purchase their patrol carbines themselves is that there is no National Firearms Act (NFA) Short Barrel Rifle (SBR) registration with the ATF and tax to pay since we maintain rifles that are over 26" and have barrels that are 16" or more.  That's a pretty attractive feature since a lot of civilians live in states that do not allow SBR rifles or have a presumption that any any civilian found in possession of one is "breaking the law."

The 27" of an STG-556 makes it easier to move throughout the tight confines of a home than some 34" or 36" standard configuration rifle and as a civilian that is your most likely area where you will use a rifle in a defensive shooting.

The added bonus of the bullpup is that the weight distribution is such that you're not muzzle heavy as hell. These days everyone likes to add on all kinds of accessories and at the end of the day you can end up with a very front heavy rifle with a standard configuration rifle. This creates something called muzzle travel or float when you are trying to stay on target, because the majority of the rifle's weight is in your support arm making it harder to hold steady.  With the bullpup the weight is either centered or in the rear placing more weight evenly between your two arms and placing more weight on your shoulder than in a traditional configuration rifle.

That gives you the ability to raise the rifle from a "snap shoot" very quickly and very accurately.  It also as another added bonus provides less muzzle rise when firing the rifle allowing for a faster time to regain the sight picture and place rounds very quickly on a double tap or string.

The other nice traits of the design is that it is a gas short stroke piston system with a rotating bolt.  That means less heat transfer to your bolt and that gives you a longer service life on your bolt, which is the core of your rifle.

It's also a three position gas adjusted system. That provides you with an adverse setting to use when shooting lower pressure ammunition or during situations where the rifle might be fouled, but you can't clean it and still need it to fire.

It's a very simple rifle in terms of take down and cleaning.

The STG-556 has drain holes cut in the stock and that allows for water to drain from the polymer stock and pistol grip rather than being held in there like tupperwear.

Quick Detach Sling Points all over the STG-556.

Hard Mount rail attachment points below the receiver placing accessories below the vented hot gas from the receiver on the STG 556.

An additional receiver venting hole in the STG's receiver allowing for this air cooled rifle to cool better and faster.

Quick detach barrel that is truely toolless and can be done even with the barrel hot.

Bolt hold open and release allows faster reloading.

Side ejection allows for a chamber check to be quickly incorporated into a reload.

Flutted Barrel saves weight and allows the barrel to cool more quickly.
