I just bought a new Gen 4 STG, after deciding it is a much better deal than the AUG A3 I had ordered. So now I'm looking for input on which side rail to put on. I'm leaning to the 3" or 6", all I plan to mount is a SureFire or Pentagon light. I saw Tomacs pics with a light attached, but I was hoping for pics of the mounted rails only.
Thanks for any input or pics. |

rizzo, Thanks for the pic, looks good in 6". Is that a MSAR rail? I thought the MSAR rails were numbered "R1", "R2", etc. Maybe I'll just order both sizes. That's not the MSAR rail. I ordered one for a buddy and it works pretty darn good. For what it's worth....http://www.promotedpawn.com/products/9 I stuck with the MSAR rails myself. |

no not MSAR rail....i was poor, and didnt work here at the time I bought it. I'm sure all is forgiven by the bullpup Gods. We all are a bit poor[er] now days... It's still a pretty good rail. My buddy likes his pretty good. He wanted the MSAR rail but he did not have the funds at the time. |

I like the 9" side rail.
It allows me to place my light right above the VFG so that I can operate it with the thumb of my support hand. I also use the Magpul "low-profile" rail to protect the unused portion of the rail and they are about $12.00 or so. This nice thing about the MSAR rail is that I can extend it out to do that with the light above the VFG and you can't do that with the AUG A3. I also really question why on earth Steyr placed their rail in such a way that your lights will be so close to where the hot gases are being vented like that from the barrel heat? Seems to me that it would take lights that are already running hot and push them over their operational temp range. I honestly don't get why they did that with the AUG A3. |

Does seem like an odd place for a rail. AXR's is right up there too, and I'm thinking about using an offset or an extension of some sort to get the light out of that area. |

Well Kent was saying back right before the AXR started going up for sale that he had some type of design for a rail system of some sort, but he never shared an CAD or anything with us. |

Silent-I agree with you about the A3 rail placement. After I considered the differences between the A3 and STG, overall cost, customer service etc., I cancelled my order and got back my deposit for an A3. I got a black STG Gen IV with 3 30 round mags, 1 10 round mag for $1780 total. The A3 was going to cost me $2,600.
I noticed in Tomacs pictures that he just moved his 6" rail forward to accomodate his light as you suggested. I'm going to go ahead and get both a 3", and 6" rail. That 9" rail just looks like "too much" to me. For an optic I'm considering either an Aimpoint M4s or Leupold Tactical prismatic. Both have removable spacers that should allow a good cheek weld. Aimpoint Leupold I can get either optic with the money I saved by cancelling the A3. |

Aimpoint Leupold I can get either optic with the money I saved by cancelling the A3. My first pic in the AUG Weaponlight thread shows my original setup w/the 3" rail. The second pic shows the 9" rail w/the light mounted forward enough to activate w/the thumb of the offhand on the VRG (thx again, D&B!). I do have a 6" rail that I've tried mounting forward on my 2nd STG to copy the 9" rail but it's a little shorter so the tailcap clicky switch isn't in as ideal a position for thumb activation (still usable but not as quick or easy to access). I'll be replacing it w/another 9" rail. For anyone comtemplating using the 9" rail setup like mine, be advised that your light mount should place the light as close to the rail as possible (ie: more "flat", less "offset") so you thumb doesn't have to reach as far. Regarding the M4S or the Leupold Prismatic, I'd considered the Prismatic earlier but discarded it due to the reticle being too busy for my tastes (they should have stuck w/the original circle/dot reticle, IMHO) and being a lensed optic you have to take eye relief into consideration. The M4S is an excellent optic, *but*, if you want to mount it further forward on the rail I suggest you get the M4 instead. Why? Because w/the M4's battery compartment at the 1 o'clock position you can reverse the M4's mount so the QD knob is on the right instead of the left, thus preventing any painful finger snags when working the charging handle (can't do that w/the M4S). This isn't a problem w/the M4S if you mount it far enough back to prevent finger snags. HTH, keep us posted!... Tomac |

Tomac-Thanks for the input, I was thinking the M4s was the way to go as I planned to mount it to the rear, and I really like the low battery compartment..
I've got an M3 that I can put on until I figure out what the final optic will be. I went ahead and ordered the 6" rail from MSAR. They were very helpful on the phone, Dave spent a half hour answering all my questions. I mentioned that I had bought a bunch of AUG mags from CDNN for the A3 I was planning on getting, and he said he'll send me MSAR springs if I need them, no charge. That's customer service. I'll post some pics after I get the StG set up. Thanks again guys for your input. |
