I'd rather ask a stupid question than do something stupid to my new rifle, so here you go:

I just received the 6" side rail for my STG556. When installing the three hex head bolts, it feels like the female threaded inserts are being stripped. I assume they are some type of nutsert, but I want to be sure. I've only taken them about quarter turn, but there is a more resistance than I expected. I assume this is designed to prevent walking out over time and the that they are not actually stripped? That would mean I should crank them on down and there is no need for Blue Loctite, right?

I'm sure lot's of you guys have done this, I'm just trying to be sure.

Thanks,

Kerry

The screws that came with the rail will fit the helicoils in the receiver.  Put them in tight, but don't break anything.  If you are unsure about this send in just the receiver and rail and we will install the rail for you.

I've installed 3 of the STG siderails and at first I, too, was worried about the amount of force needed to seat the screws. However, this turns out to be normal and loctite is definitely *not* needed!

God, I love the internet.

Thanks guys,

Kerry

ETA: Very easy to tell when it is tight. Rail doesn't move and the bolt stops turning.

Yep, Same here. I thought I was crossthreading my bolts and went ahead and craked them down. All three were tight as $hit. As the bolts turn you feel like you will break them off but at the last minute they just stop cold and that is it.

I will never have to worry about them falling out. I did pull them out to check for crossthreading none found and now they are good to go!

Warning!!!!! As you take the bolts out be sure to push down on the rail until all of the bolts are totaly out. As I learned if you let the rail go loose on the last bolt the helicoil will come out with the last bolt. Don't ask how I know.

I felt stupid and contacted MSAR they said I am ok and they sent me 3 coils and 3 new bolts. All I had to do is stop by the auto parts store and get a helicoil installer to put the coil back in. DO NOT use the bolt to run the coil back into the receiver as it will crush the coil....Don't ask how I know that as well Use the installer only! Thank goodness the only coil that did not make it was the first original coil. RIP.
