There was a thread like a month ago here in this subforum on sighting in targets. One of you guys here posted a 4 square design. So that's where I got the idea to do this:
That is a 1" gap in the middle. And then I thought I would try this: 
The post it notes are 3" by 3". I tried making something with 2X2's I also bought, but I wasn't having much luck. I tried making color copies, but that neon or day glow color doesn't come out well on a copier. Just curious, what do you guys think? |

My HP color laser printer from 2007 never really did get along with my Mac from 2011. And now that HP has stopped providing updates or support to that printer, it really is SOL. And my work would probably frown upon printing them out there. |
I have settled on light blue as the easiest color to see through a scope. The squares are at a 45 degree angle so the crosshairs intersect the corners of the square. One inch grids in case your sighting in. Target with the green square is an old design I abandoned, but I'm using them up. |

I'm still messing with the design of my own targets, but I found that you need to be careful about how much contrast you provide at the center of the target.
I had a very nice grid target with a black, 1" square at the center. Turns out that it's hard to see holes in a black square - sometimes even if you're up close. I'm looking at somewhere around 20% gray (my laser printer is black only) for the center. I also think dryflash3's blue diamonds are a great idea, which means I need to fire up the inkjet if I want to run off something like that. |

I got the blue diamond idea from looking at some targets in a story in Handloader magazine.
I fired up Power Point and made some. I have settled on the light blue color because it works best for me in bright or overcast days. 
Hard to see 22 cal holes at 100 yds if they are in the black. My AR is sighted in for 52 gr MK's, and the 69 gr MK's shoot about an inch right. So nobody has to ask, powder used was CFE 223, OAL 2.250 rest of the load data is on target. |

The weather was nice here in the St. Louis metro area yesterday, so I made it to the range.
Luckily I brought two AR's with me....one in 7.62X39 (it's a DPMS and wears a Vortex 1-4 power scope. I want to say it is a PST Viper, but I'd have to look at the box again.) The other is my Franken AR in .223. I say luckily because I loaded up both guns into my car....got halfway to the range when it donned on me that I forgot to bring ammo for the .223 .

The Vortex has an illuminated reticle which looks like this: 
So, like dryflash said above, the blue post it notes provided the best contrast for me. That is just one inch spacing between the blue squares. (And the orange squares). Pictured in OP is the bright yellow squares. That was actually the worst to look at, so I didn't even bother shooting it. The adjacent squares with no gap wasn't that great to shoot at. Thanks for all the advice. |

If you have a standard reticle, then adjust the gap between the squares so that the crosshairs exactly fill the gap.
That enables you to use the same hold for each shot. Which will aid accuracy. Myself I just rotated the squares 45 degrees and put the crosshairs on the points of the square. This way target is not limited to a specific range. Due to gap between the squares and the crosshairs filling the gap at a variable rate at different ranges. |

Rotate the post it notes 45 degrees to get a diamond shape. The other target I had made last summer was just too busy. Too many aiming points on one 8.5X11 sheet. And too many grid lines. It was blaze orange, so with a red reticle, the contrast wasn't there like with the blue. |
I just want you to know, this thread suck for those of us with only a black and white printer..... 
On a more serous note though I use targets from here (Which was linked above as well) http://www.targetz.com/ They have a whole slew of targets, although most are variations of the same theme. |

Go to office supply store and get some blue Post It's, place on sheet of paper. Done. I went to the office supply aisle at wally world. Bought some 2X2 and 3X3 post it notes. I really wanted Avery brand computer printer labels, but as best as I could navigate their website, I could not find any square day glow labels.
