Between CCI, Winchester, Remington and S&B which Small Pistol primers are the softest? Which require the least hammer strike to set off?
Thank You |

Thank You Just in case you didn't know, (the warning is easy to miss I know this first hand), Remington 6 1/2 small rifle primers are not for use in .223/5.56 ammo. They are for lower pressure rounds like .22 Hornet and are pretty soft/thin. Motor |

I had a .223 AI built and with modest loads I'd get pierced primers. Finally, the light bulb lit and I realized what the problem was.........the primers. |

If your FP is protruding between .028 and .032", and have the correct amount of hammer pressure to the Fp, and the primer is set the correct distance to the face of the rim, then should not have a problem. Hence if the above it wrong, and it resolved, then a thin cup primer is just going to end up piercing each time it ignited instead. Hence the thickness of the primer cup is working ammo pressure sensitive to give back the correct spent primer readings. So what pistol do you have, what mods have you done, and are you sure that the problem is not that you are squashing the primers too deep on primer setting instead? |

Not in your list, but Federal are the easiest to set off, and why the over sized packaging. Quoted:

Thank You Not in your list, but Federal are the easiest to set off, and why the over sized packaging. I don't buy Federal primers because of the oversized packaging and I wondered why Federal came in such large boxes. Now I know and I will start buying Federal for use in my lite triggered XDM 5.25. Thanks for the Info. VonBark |

Many years ago I won a S&W model 13 at my very first PPC match, I won the 'Unclassified' category. I took that brand new revolver to a well known custom pistol smith, well known for his custom PPC revolvers, I had him custom build a PPC revolver for me. One of the very first things he told me was that it was set up to use Federal primers only, other brands would be unreliable. When testing that pistol I had some 38 special loads already made up with Winchester primers. I never had a single misfire with that revolver using Federal primers, when I tested it with the Winchester primers I got about 50% misfires, so the difference was pretty obvious. |
