Have some 162 gr AP 308 rounds for my AR10. Was thinking of loading some up for my bolt gun. Does AP wear hard on a barrel? Its my semi precision rifle and don't want to damage the barrel. Don't care to much on the AR if it wears faster on that. Would have to develop some rounds to match my 178 gr bullets as close as possible @100 yards. Thinking around .2 less of varget should get it close.

It has a hardened steel core penetrator. The jacket material is the same as Ball ammo and it has lead between the core and the jacket. It shoots just like Ball. The AP only comes into play at impact and if the penetrator is off center which causes a wobble (like some 62 gr 5.56mm AP).

Thanks for replying. Kind of figured that but wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something. Sucks doing load development on these since they are hard to find. Already went through 15 for the AR but got them where they need to be.

Yep, what armyordguy said.  My experience with the black tip 308 stuff was pretty mixed.  I ended up loading 100 of them after testing,   Some would shoot to POA, but many would be so far off beyond 100 yds I never loaded any more.  My guess is just what he said, the insert was off just enough to throw the bullet off.
