I want to put up some ammo into long term storage - 20+ years unless needed.  I will be putting it away in ammo cans with moisture absorber packets.  It will be kept in a finished basement that is climate controlled and dry.  All of this ammo will be my own reloads. Do I need to be concerned with hand oils from handling the brass?  Should I clean the loaded ammo with walnut media for 10-20 minutes to remove any oils before packaging it away?  If I did this I would then handle with medical gloves and wipe of the dust and put in ammo cans.  Is all of this needed or am I over thinking what I need to do??

I have been reloading for over 25 years and never kept any ammo put away.  It has always been - shoot, reload, repeat...
I would like to also thank everyone for the great information shared here.  I learn something new all the time and visit almost daily.

Doesn't really take that much.  30 cal ammo cans with a desiccant pack taped to the inside lid.  Outside of that, my dad stored 270 cartridges outside in a garage loose for over 30 years.  They did just fine.

If it concerns you just wear the gloves throughout the process.

I still use NuFinish when tumbling the brass clean... so I don't worry about finger prints.

I do suggest you label every can with contents, date, and load info... so you don't have to wonder and open them.

Buy the desiccants in bulk, ( ULine ) and change the desiccants after 3-4 months for peace of mind. That helps remove any residual moisture in the can... from that point the replacement desi' will be fine for years.

Store all ammo cans off of the floor to help mitigate "heat / cold" transfer... stable temps are helpful to longevity.

Make sure your reloading is done in as free of moisture environment as possible.... less possible moisture inside the case.

Is all this "overkill" ?  Not if you have a bunch of money tied up in ammo.  Better safe then sorry.
