Hello,

Can anyone recommend some reloading manuals for shotshell reloads (particularly for slugs)?

I am new to shotgun shell reloading.  I was gifted a MEC 600Jr Mark V single stage in 20 gauge.  I considered converting the press to 12 gauge as MEC sells dies.

Thanks,
Cheese

Lyman puts out a good one.

These are good also.

I'm sure they are not now the latest manuals in the pics as the pics are a couple of years old.

Converting press is not much fun. You may be better served finding a used one on ebay like me.. $75... not much more than the conversion price I think.

The lee slug mold has a little info on loading their slug.

The problem I find with shotgun reloading is the fact that all the manuals say how important it is to keep to specific load data. I almost bought a Lee mold but instead bought the Lyman because I had the Lyman shotshell manual (which I do recommend). Good to know that Lee has data in their mold. Any idea if anyone else publishes data for the Lee molds? They seem so popular.

OP, what slugs are you casting or are you buying the slugs? You should keep that in mind. Being relatively new to shotshell reloading, it's not easy to just guess at which wad/shell will work with what slug mold.

Unless you load a lot of them it may not be worth the expense.

I highly recommend BPI's Shotgun Slug manual. However, lots of their data uses hulls, wads, and slugs that you'll  have to buy from them. Not a bad thing to buy the components from them though. Ballistic Products Inc. is a good company to deal with. They also sell any tools you may need for loading slugs. They sell buckshot manuals also.

Cast Boolits has a lot of info.

I hope you bought the 525 air gun pellet Lyman and not the much less accurate foster slug mold I bought.

I have 175 of these Mini14esque slugs loaded and stored.  That is the number it takes to fill a 50 cal ammo can.

I just bought the air gun pellet mold.  It isn't here yet. I will post about it when it shows up.

Yes get the 12 Ga die set. I load with a Mec 600 Jr.

If you didn't get a manual, you can download one at Mec's site.

BPI also makes a roll crimping tool you put in a drill. I suspect this would be substantially easier than trying to star crimp slug loads. I use it for certain specialty bird loads and it works very well.

I looked into the roll crimping system they had. Seems interesting but a bit slow. No issues with the star crimping of the Lyman slug. Lyman has recipes with the proper wads to have the slug fit perfect at the crimp. I works perfect once you setup the die right. No idea if the roll crimp would make things any more accurate? My guess is not..

I agree with two posts. One is I'd buy a separate press rather than a conversion kit. Used prices are reasonable. Second, if you don't shoot very many slugs or buckshot loads and have the molds, lead pots, and tools to make your own slugs, and surplus lead then I don't think it's worthwhile to even bother loading slugs and buckshot. I haven't loaded any buckshot or lead shot loads for a few years due to the high cost of shot and shotshell primers . Nice to have the capability to reload your own if necessary.

Pennies a round loading your own.

Dollar plus buying them.

If you want to shoot a lot at the range with buck and slugs the math makes you want to load them yourself.

ETA: Buck a pound buys #8 range recycled shot if you are willing to meet a guy.   They mine the trap fields and clean and recoat the shot with graphite.

Thanks all, I don't have a slug mold but I do have casting equipment.

I will get the books and start reading.  I went online and got a manual from MEC.

I would like to shoot more slugs for practice for hunting season and I am kicking around the idea of Three Gun.

Thanks again!
