All,
I have been reloading 9mm quite well thanks to the advice here. Due to my success, I decided to try my hand with bottle necked cartridges with 300BO. The question is, I adjusted my Dillon 550 according to instructions, lubed and sized the cases. I attempted to trim the cases to 2.26+/- with my WFT trimmer. Thus the problem arose. I was attempting to resize two different sources of brass. The first was Gemtech 300, the other was mixed headstamp brass from once fired Freedom munitions resized brass. When I went to trim, the Gemtech brass trimmed as advertised. The Freedom Munitions would get stuck in the trimmer and not trim. My question is: Should not full length resized brass be all the same? Do I need to adjust my press differently? It is frustrating enough that I gave up on this 3 months ago. |

For starters, 300 BLK trim length isn't 2.260. That would be max Cartridge length, based on Mag capacity. 300 BLK trim length is 1.368 -.020, so 1.348 up to 1.368, 1.358-1.360 being typical.
And you have more than two headstamps there. The freedom munitions is going to be a bunch of mixed brass. Different brass will "spring back" differently. The sticking in your trimmer could be based on brass with thicker necks. If the neck thickness is over 0.014, it might not fit in the trimmer correctly. I could be wrong though, I use a Giraud, not a WFT. Also, a Sheridan case gauge might help to make sure that your brass will chamber easily and with sizing die setup. What type of sizing die are you using? |

Quoted:
You are a victim of springback with mixed cases. Die adjusting instructions are where you start from, then adjust your sizing die to allow for the tolerances in your press, dies, shellholder, chamber, and mixed cases. Lots of things the "one size fits all" instructions do not account for. If you don't have a case gauge or better yet a headspace gauge, you have to use your chamber. You need to lower your sizing die. When adjusting sizing die, size a case, wipe off lube. Chamber and extract it. If that doesn't go smoothly, lower die 1/16 turn and repeat. Once case chambers and extracts smoothly, lower die 1/16 turn more. http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg272/dryflash3/Case%20Gauge/P3030544_zps10acbd9b.jpg Every time you size cases, this should be the first thing you check. So resize the cases that stick (check them in your chamber) and then try trimming them to 1.360. What I trim mine to. What is the device in the calepers? Is it also needed to reload 300blk? |

http://www.midwayusa.com/product/479704/hornady-lock-n-load-headspace-gage-5-bushing-set-with-comparator The Hornady headspace tool. What you use if you want to set your sizing die correctly. You measure 5 or so fired in your chamber cases. Write down that number. My 5.56 chamber is 1.562. ![]() So my sizing die is adjusted to set shoulder back .003 to 1.459. Works the same way in 300 blk or any other bottleneck cartridge. |
