I just got 50 lbs+/- of stick on wheel weights for free.
I have no idea if they are basicly the same as clip on WWs. Any ideas or ideas how to find out? |

Years ago --when I was casting a LOT------I had some wheel weights analyzed on an electron spectrometer(I think it was called)(it was good to have buddies in the lab). The stick-on weights were nearly pure lead, with only traces of other materials.
Bear in mind this has been 20 years ago........... |

Stick on weights are very soft and work great for black powder guns. If you want to use them for pistol or rifle bullets, you are going to have to alloy them with something harder. I suggest you do some reading here, http://www.lasc.us/Fryxell_Book_Contents.htm chapter 3. |

where is a reliable place to get wheel weights? i have yet to look into it(still getting equipment for casting) but have heard that many stored wont give them out anymore I have a buddy who's dad owns a tire /repair shop. He saves most of the clip style to reuse but tosses the stick on style in a box. I asked at just the right time. Box was full and needed to be cleared out. At second check, it's much more that 50 lbs. Not sure what but it's a heavy damn box. I really wanted some of the clip on style ( I heard they are better for bullets) but these were free and beggars can't be choosers. Ask at the tire shops, at the least you can offer scrap cost and buy them fairly cheaply. |

I was getting them at an independent tire shop. Most chains won't let you have them. Check dealerships as well. The last few buckets were a lot of steel and zinc. Iirc a 5 gallon bucket is roughly 130 lbs. I have seen soww zn. If you have a repair shop that works on heavy offroad equipment, check there. I was getting buckets from them that had 10 and 13 oz coww! I couldn't even lift the bucket!

The local tire shops sell 5 gallon buckets of WW for $35, but I have no idea what the composition of most of the weights are. I know I looked at a bucket full at one of the local salvage yards, and it felt a lot heavier than 130 lbs...and they were asking $0.60/lb. I've been considering getting into pouring my own in .41, .44, and .45 Colt, so have been looking at stockpiling a few hundred pounds of lead...but I definitely don't want to get stuck with a bunch of steel or zinc stuff. |
