Yesterday, I loaded 20 300 blackouts with some 150 grain Winchester RN pulled bullets from some 30-30 shells that were given to me. The loads were heavily compressed. I started at 16.5 grains which filled to the bottom of the neck. 17.7 was nearly full. I backed down to 17.3. To get to the length needed per the master thread instructions, it was very heavily compressed I have never dealt with compressing a powder this much before.  First time loading blackout and first experience with 4227.

Any thoughts would be great.

Thanks

I've only loaded subs with 4227 so I'd like to know also.

I had a related problem last year. Here is a thread I created: https://www.ar15.com/archive/topic.html?b=6&f=42&t=426770

Essentially, I would recommend using Hornady's data for 150's.. Sounds like you are using Hodgdon's. Also, have you verified these rounds feed ok? AR? The Hodgdon 150 SP's fed fine but I never got the accuracy I wanted. I sold them and went to 150 FMJ.

Good luck!

Feed ok. I did use Hodgdon's data. I am thinking I might scrap this idea and stick to a different profile bullet. There is a lot of room in the magazine, and the next rounds would get bumped ahead quite a ways, causing damage to the bullet as well.

Wow - I looked at that thread.  It sounds like I might be considerably over. Especially with having to seat them so deep. I think I am going to just wait until I can order some fmj or use some Speer hot cor bullets that I have for the .30-06. Still have to get an optic so in no hurry.

Compressed loads with 4227 are pretty normal. Even up to 120% fill. BUT if you aren't sure DON'T shoot them.

That little voice in your head is usually right.

It doesn't sound like you are using the ideal projectile or data that is ideal for the projectile you have.

I'm using IMR 4227 with (2) loads:

16 grains with a Speer TNT 125 gr bullet.  Seating them to about 2.220"

10 grains with Sierra MK HPBT 220 gr bullets.  Seating them to max 2.260"

Both those are very close to compressed but not.

I started at 17 grains for my supersonic loads and those were compressed.  I backed it down because I don't need the velocity for plinking.

You were right to trust your gut:

At least according to the Hornady reloading manual.

Wow. I will pull these and start over. I also have some 150 rn hornady that I have no use for that I was going to try, and I had these as well. I will start over with the Hornady data.
