I have a Dillon 550 press, I am loading Hornady 75gr. Hollow Point Boat Tail Bullets over Varget...
I am having this weird problem.. where my OAL seems to be all over the place... I am shooting for 2.24 and I keep getting a few random shorts and longs......... they range from 2.237 to 2.2588 All my cases have been trimmed to within .005-.008 of each other.. Any ideals of what can be going on????

If you are measuring from the case head to the tip of the bullet, then the variation you are seeing is the normal variation caused by the variation in bullet lengths. The tips of HPBT bullets vary by about 0.010" due to the pointing process for the hollow point bullet style. Measure the bullets, you'll see the variation I am referring to.
There's only one thing to worry about - that you seat the bullets deep enough that the cartridge with the longest bullet still fits in the magazine. Honestly, 2.240" nominal should be just fine. Most seating stems contact the ogive of the bullet, not the tip. This means the seating is very consistent relative to the ogive. |

Your seating die is contacting the bullet ogive. You are measuring OAL. 2 different things. Google ogive for more info. OAL is necessary as far as ensuring your loads will feed through a mag. Called mag length. What I do, mag length is 2.260. So I seat to 2.250, which allows for some variation for OAL. Your loads will shoot fine if they feed from a mag, because the case head to ojive length will be consistent. |
