Is it okay to use regular SP primers or do I need magnum SP primers?

Standard small pistol primers is what you want. .45acp is a low pressure round using fast burning powders. Around 18,000 psi is close to maximum, about half the pressure of 9mm which can also use standard small pistol primers.

I just loaded up a bunch of SPP .45 using CCI 500 SPP. Ran just like LPP.

It depends.

If using fast burning powders like AA#5 Win231 Green Dot etc then use SPP.

If using slow powders like Blue Dot I really recommend Magnum primers.

I am using Bullseye...fastest powder on the market, IIRC.

I have had good luck with Bullseye... standard primers are fine.

For Bullseye (the powder) I use standard.  Actually, I use Federal Match because these are segregated specifically for my Bullseye match pistol.

Personally I have found it comfortable for target loads...not sure if I would trust a self defense load with it though.

My favorite is 9mm... 4.0-4.2 grains Bullseye, 115 grain FMJ...run through a used Sig P228.

I don't load SD ammo...  if I did, I think I'd like to try the BE-86, the new powder out from Alliant.   I believe it is Bullseye with added flash suppressant and slightly slower burn, so with a performance more like Power Pistol.   Looks like a perfect combination for a self defense round.

Thanks for the tip.

I'll keep my eyes peeled for BE86, which I have not seen for sale yet. I can find LOTS of powder here in the greater DC area (head down south and it becomes more available), but no pistol powder other than IMR700 Hi-Skor and Bullseye.
