One of the few 223 powders that I can find is IMR-4320.
I've got a Ruger AR 556 and Hornady 55 grain bullets.
I know nothing about 4320 other than it is available.
Is it any good in a 223 (used for plinking at 50 yards)?

I've used it in my 16" carbine gassed gun. Worked well. 25.0grs behind the Hornady 55FMJBT worked fine for short/mid range shooting.

The burn rate chart shows it next to varget and 748.
I'd try a light load, and work up.
Should work fine.

I made fifty test loads each with 4320 and Xtreme 55g .223 FMJ, SIE 69 & 77 HPBT.  Won't be able to shoot them until January.

Has a burn rate similar to Varget, I've used it with 77 SMKs with results better than Varget, although at lower velocity.

It's a very underrated powder.

I've never used it for 55gr, but it works great in heavy .223 loads and I've shot lots of it in .308.

I have a pet 4320 load with Hornady 68 grain HPBT bullets that hovers right around 3000fps and is very accurate.

Makes me wonder why people are go gaga for Varget.     I think there are a lot of sheeple that love Varget but I'll leave that discussion for someone that likes to argue on the internet.

Its the first powder I ever loaded with, 25.0 grains topped with a 55 grain fmjbt made some respectable groups at 100 yards out of a 16" carbine. The only complaint I have is that it is a long grain powder that doesn't meter as well as a ball powder does. So keep an eye on charge weights if you're looking for consistency and expect to cut a few kernels in your measure (at least my uniflow does).

It's not a long grain powder at all.   It's an extruded powder, but much shorter cut than IMR 4895/4064/etc.     It's more in line with H322/RL15 on metering qualities in my experience.

I like 4320 for 223 with 55 gr bullets, it's a short grain powder unlike varget so it meters well, i use 25.6 with 55 v-max and fmj's with any sr primer.

I like IMR-4320. I tried it with Sierra's 55gr HP #1390 in my VTR-15. I ended up getting a .700" 5 shot group at 100 yards with it.

I would not be very sad if it was the only thing I could find.

I also have used it with 150gr bullets in the 7.62x54R with very good results. It's a good old powder. :)

IMR-4320 is my go-to powder for .223 with 55- 68 grain bullets now.

I like way better than 748 or Varget. Sad to say though I ran out a few months back and can't find anymore... dammit. I guess I'm gonna be forced to try that new CFE 223 stuff now.

I have tried various powders in my 16" AR15. IMR4198, IMR4895, TAC, LT-32 & H335. I have not tried IMR4320 may have to buy a pound and see.

The note about having less than 5 in stock is a very recent addition so if you want some I'd act soon.
I just bought 16 pounds.

I keep a few pounds on hand, as well as H4350 and Unique pistol powder for when times are tough as far as finding powder. I have an old Lyman (I believe) manual from the 70s or 80s that lists a IMR4320 load for a lot of different cartridges. I have had good results with it in .22-250 and 5.6x57. I have never used it in .223 though. If I get some free time I may have to work up some loads with 69gr. SMKs to see what it will do.
