With the shortage of handgun reloading powder it's been tough to find the usual suspects. My buddy found a couple pounds of Red Dot shotgun powder on a recent trip. I have read that people had good luck using it to reload .45 and sometimes 9mm. I recently loaded up a batch of .45 using a 200 gr. plated Xtreme bullet over 4.7 grains of the Red Dot. Everything shot fin (smelled like shooting my shotgun).  Recoil was a bit snappy. I think next time I'll drop the charge down to 4.5 or so.
What experiences do any of you have with using Red Dot for handgun? What recipes have you had success with? Next time I'm gonna try 9mm. Any suggestions?

lots of folks using Red Dot with good results in 9mm. What bullet weight do you plan to load? Jacketed or cast?

I've used Red Dot in .40S&W loads as well as .45ACP loads LONG BEFORE the powder crunch hit... I kike it, it works, and it's available... I have a 8 pound jug ready to burn up.

I've used it for 9mm, .40, and .45.

9mm:
3.0-3.2 grains for 147gr

.40
Minor load:  2.7 grains with 200gr bullet
Major load:  3.5 grains with 200gr bullet

.45
4.1 grains with 230gr bullet

I'm using Bullseye for most of what I do now but I keep Red Dot on the shelf as a backup.

I use RD and lead with .45 acp, 9mm, 38 spl and 357 magnum. It's not the best choice but works very well.

.45 ACP

4.0 gr RD, 200 gr Missouri IDP #1 SWC, Fed 150 primer

I had barrel leading problems until I switched to Red Dot. Now I can shoot 200 rounds and no leading. It is dirty though. Lots of soft carbon build-up around chamber area.

4.7 to 4.8 gr of Reddot over 200 gr Bear Creek LRN gave 162 to 172  Major power factor loads.

It is a powder I consider a good back up, but not my first choice.
