I had my first failure to fire to day after  reloading 1000s of 9mm loaded. Brought it back home. Primer strike was good out of Springfield XD9 SC. Pulled bullet, powder charge was good, (6.4 Hs6) anvil on primer (CCI 500), was good. The other 499 rounds all fired normally. I must of just got a bad one I guess. Never had FTF before.

Did you try firing it a second time? Sometimes if the primer isn't seated fully, the first strike might not set off the primer and the firing pin impact just drives the primer deeper into the pocket. I've had several rounds through the years that didn't fire the first time but did on a second strike.

I probably should have. Xd is striker fired didn't feel like loading it up in mag again.

I had a dud in 38 Super yrs ago.. picked it up, and took it apart when I got home..

Powder - yes

Carefully pushed primer out, could see shiny inside cup.. maker sold me a primer cup and anvil with no prime mix or cover paper.  Returned primer to maker via vendor building at ATA when it was local, they put in evidence type envelope and had me fill out contact info.. I got coupon for $25 I think it was, still had to fork out a couple dollar extra to cover brick of primers

Usually the FTFs I get is in .45ACP during the winter Bullseye league. A second strike usually fires.

As the other poster said, almost always caused by a primer that was not seated all the way.  First strike moves the primer all the way in and this move steals enough energy from the striker to cause FTF.  Will go off the second time around.

To prevent this from happening, all rounds needs to be QA by brushing your index finger across the bottom of the case, your finger will detect any primers that are proud.  Then it is just up to you to either pull the round and reseat or reseat the loaded round (very slowly).

Its possible too to damage a primer when seating it and really not being able to tell that it is damaged. I also agree with the primer being high and moving forward when struck. The striker fired guns do seem to have less impact power. This may or may not actually be true.
