Just picked up 8 pounds of IMR 4227, and I've never used this powder.
Anyone have experience using it? I plan to use it for .44 magnum reloads, and maybe .357 magnum. I figure 8 pounds should be enough for about 2,500 44 mag reloads using a 240 grain bullet. I'm running low on Unique and 296, and I want to save my Blue Dot and Power Pistol for other calibers. Not much else out there as far as powder. Just figured I'd try the 4227 since every loadbook I have lists it under the magnum's data. What has me worried is that it's still instock when everything else on-line is OOS. Either IMR made a ton of it recently or nobody wants it. |

I loaded light loads in my .44 magnum with a plain base copy of the lyman 429303. Pistol was a 12" barrel TC Contender.
I found it to be very very dirty but also extremely accurate. Note these were intentionally light loads and heavier loads might clean up the mess considerably. At 25 yards that would group slightly over an inch and at 50 they would shoot well enough that any variation was my fault, although I'm not shooting to the accuracy potential of the gun with the current optics on it. |

I reload 44 for a friend in exchange for ranch use. Essentially, I bring him 44's, we have a good time shooting for day.
He runs a S&W 6" and a Henry's lever 20" (think). Last year, without 2400 available, I ran into Blue Dot and 4227 at LGS. Ran a ladder of both. 240 Dardas cast ran charges of 21.5-24gr 4227. Results were good but he felt Blue Dot was a little better. Got him to switch to plated (only because I hate dealing with lead and the lube) so I was about ready to run some more test loads with 4227 since our Blue Dot is about gone. It ran fine through a Lee powder dispense. I have since switched to Hornady Progressive and it runs smooth through that too. Fills the case nicely so easy to see.. Like others say, if it doesn't treat you well, you can run some fun rounds in the 300BO. |

I don't load it for magnum pistol but rather .300 blackout works great measures nicely and good velocity in both cast bullets and jacked. I'd say overall good powder for its purpose. This ^ It sounds better (quieter) than 1680 in my sub loads. Haven't tried any subs with it yet. I have been using hog 4198 for my 230 gr thumpers 11.4 to be exact with 2 inches cut off buffer spring. I did just do a trade. 8 pds h1000 for 16 pounds of old 4227 in old metal cans in factory sealed crate. They say imr "formerly dupont" guessing 70's not real sure how good trade I got but figured I did ok since stupid me ordered h1000 on spur moment when it came in stock last year. I didn't realize I would have zero use for it. I love 4227 for supers yes Lil dirty but I clean after every range trip anyway so safe shooting ! |

old 4227 in old metal cans in factory sealed crate Photos If possible, move the powder out of metal cans into the new plastic containers. But i am not positive its only from rusting of the metal? Powder may be breaking down? Shooting some IMR 4198 now, that has rust in it. Seem ok so far?? Good luck with your powder.
